Cedar Bridge Tavern Decision

The Asbury Park Press had an article today re an unpcoming meeting to decide if the State will buy the Tavern for $120,000 from Mr. Koenig. Koenig has owned it for 40 years and is in his 80's. He is allowed to reside in the house indefinately but the property will be under the authority of NJ. Article talked about the 1782 skirmish there and how it is considered to be the last battle of the Rev. War to many. The bar inside is the oldest in the State and perhaps on the East Coast! (circa 1812)..

I just hope they do something with it if they buy it and not let it just sit there and fall apart like Bulltown. I like the way it is today and don't want them to change it in any way. It's one of the best-kept secrets of the Pines. If the State buys it I imagine they will clear the yards, tear down the porch and put signs up. ugghh... Still at least the State has taken notice this time!

Anyway, I had heard there was something going on from a member of this site who is related to him. They were there when Rudy Koenig was looking to buy, and had purchased the place years ago. The lake was not there then because as my 1959 Greenwood Forest survey map shows the dam had broke and it drained. I was told that the Clayton's were taking stone out of it to build the restaurant on 72. The dam was subsequently fixed and the lake returned.

I am concerned the state has good intentions, but as what usually happens they loose interest and things go downhill. Hopefully, that will not happen.

Good question. I'll check with Dave and Jerseyman to see if they have any ideas. It might depend on whether the militia recovered his body or whether the tories were left with it. We'll see.

I'm still amazed at the oldest bar thing. All those 18th century taverns and not one original bar. Whole lotta rehab goin on over time.

Yes there are 1930's photo's on the Library of Congress Website of the place.

I'd buy the place for $120k. It probably needs another $2-300k to rehab it though.
