It magically reappeared. It feels like cast iron and is filled with gravel.

That would be the best location to place it because the base is flat and still intact with the bolts. However, I mentioned on Facebook they are highly collective and without the bolts being welded it may not last long.

It does not have the top cap as they were stolen years ago. I only found intact caps far down South Jersey. The posts are or were more common to find.

The old adage that, “People will steal anything that’s not bolted down,” is no longer operative.

I remember when a roadside memorial was put up near Batsto to honor two people killed in a motorcycle accident. It was a Harley Davidson logo with the names of the deceased. It was forged out of metal and whoever made it did a really nice job. I remember thinking as I walked by it, “I hope nobody steals that.” Sure enough, they did. So a second memorial plaque went up and they put a sign next to it asking people to please not remove it. That one was stolen as well. How devoid of a conscience do you have to be to steal a roadside memorial somebody put up to remember a loved one who died tragically?

I wonder if it was removed by the state and not stolen? This just came from a quick search, there's some controversy about this, and possibly a newer law is in effect now?

"All roadside memorials, or additions thereto, installed without first contacting the Authority shall be subject to the location and removal requirements of (b) and (c) above."

Good find. Boy, that is a really cold law. I can’t imagine any police officer doing more than issuing a warning to a grieving person setting up what the state considers an illegal roadside memorial.

There are quite a few that have been up for a very long time and the police don't bother them. I bet they only do something when they get a complaint and are forced to act.

Probably not a popular opinion to have, but I never did care for these roadside memorials. It's horrible and I feel for the victim and their family. That being said, imagine if we put up one of these memorials at every location that every person has had an accident or a tragedy. It would be a complete mess. I am against these roadside memorials as much as I am the coverage we give famous people who unfortunately pass away. People die every day. People lose loved ones everyday. Just because you're some movie star or some actor or some politician and you pass, why was your passing more important than that other person's family member?

I’m actually not a big fan of roadside memorials either. A man was killed on a motorcycle on the bridge leading into the island where I live. He was going so fast when he slammed into the concrete barrier on the shoulder it severed one of his legs, which was the only part of him left on the road. A person I know discovered his severed leg on the bridge, not even knowing how or why it got there because everything else went over the bridge and out of sight.

A memorial was erected on the bridge. Then every day as I was leaving for work and coming home from work I had to drive by that memorial and be reminded of that. But I’m still not against roadside memorials if it brings the family of the deceased some comfort and connection.

There is a memorial I pass by occasionally on a dirt road not too far from Ongs Hat. There are photos of two young girls and lots of other items of remembrance. I can’t imagine what it’s like for that family to lose two children and if decorating that spot brings them some comfort I’m perfectly fine with it. FYI, if you stop and visit that spot there is a camera on it.
