Dear Fellow Lovers of the PBs,

Can someone please explain to me the difference between a cellar hole and a furnace? I went to Frienship this weekend and think I was seeing cellar holes, but was I? I was walking in these pits about 4 feet deep...if they are cellar holes, what's a furnace look like and where can I see one?

Thanks,

Gopher

Yes, those were celler holes at Friendship. A furnance looks like a huge chimney. There are not many still standing. The furnance at Weymouth is probably the best preserved furnance I can think of!

Ok, thanks fellas. So the cellar holes are the remains from residence, not buildings? Can they be from both? Do we know what the ones from Friendship are from?

Thanks again--

They can be residences, shops, taverns -- whatever building was there.

The majority of the cellar holes at Friendship were houses. The large cellar hole on the edge of the field was the cranberry packing house.
