CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson University student Nathan Weaver set out to determine how to help turtles cross the road. He ended up getting a glimpse into the dark souls of some humans.

Weaver put a realistic rubber turtle in the middle of a lane on a busy road near campus. Then he got out of the way and watched over the next hour as seven drivers swerved and deliberately ran over the animal. Several more apparently tried to hit it but missed.

"I've heard of people and from friends who knew people that ran over turtles. But to see it out here like this was a bit shocking," said Weaver, a 22-year-old senior in Clemson's School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.
To seasoned researchers, the practice wasn't surprising.

I have seen people purposely run over animals with their cars. Though I'm not a hunter myself and even release all the fish I catch, I'm okay with people hunting game for food, but I can't relate to the mentality of killing an animal for fun. I think a person who does that has some kind of sadistic screw loose.

I cringe when I see an animal deliberately run over, but I know people that get excited to have the opportunity to do such a thing.:(

A common theme...

It's a sign of the times and even more proof that our society is quickly heading down the crapper. At this rate, I think we have 3-5 more new generations of people to go before our society, as we once knew it, will be totally annihilated.

you know, on two occassions when I was trying to save/help a turtle cross the road I had drivers run the turtle over right in front of me. The first time it happened I figured the driver was not paying attention to the road and didn't see the turtle because he was looking at me. The second time, I pointed to the turtle as the car approached so as to not have the same problem as before. Yet the driver ran it over and I was certain he saw it.

That was two times out of perhaps a couple dozen rescues. However, most of those rescues took place without any other cars around. I always wondered about those inncidents because I couldn't figure why anyone would intentionally run over a turtle. It didn't even occur to me that such a threat existed.

I do and did brake for turtles ! This past summer I spent May , June and part of July as a volunteer to prevent turtle road mortality , in a well known area in So .Ocean County . These animals need all the help they can get .we were working with gravid nesting terrapins .The One morning i was late( construction) , i found a gravid female DOR .Luckily , we were able to extract all the eggs and place them in a man-made nest . Raccoons , etc also prey on the eggs ..I almost caused a pile-up on RT 70 helping a very un-grateful snapping turtle .The best was when i slammed on the brakes with 10 bikers in back of me ! My point is you don 't have to push the envelope like i did , but i still think ( hope ) there are more people like us that care .It s now to the point the Box Turtle is considerd a species of "special concern " by the state of NJ .Brake for WL !!
Best wishes to all for 2013 !!

Unfortunately there are some whose gene pool needs a bit of chlorine. I do want to say, though, that as a teacher I do see more benevolence and conscience in the kids that I teach today than I saw 10 years ago. I hope that the generation coming up makes the world a better place, and when appropriate, I remind them that it is in their hands to do so.

There was an old funny list of 'you know it's going to be a bad day when...' and one of the examples was getting your horn stuck while driving behind a group of Hell's Angels. Yikes!

Happy New Year to you too.
