To get an initial reading you will need to leave it in a wide open area, Barry, away from trees for a while. You will be able to get a reading on that particular gps that way. Initializing that particular unit was a bit more complex than the newer gps', but I was able to do it on that gps.
Also, I don't think that gps has WAAS accuracy, which accounts for the difference in accuracy. But it will give you a very general idea, especially given that there isn't a lot of elevation within the pines.

Professional equipment will get you on the money if in an open area, but handhelds will not. But I have arrived within 3 feet of some markers in open area's such as the one in friendship or on higher elevations not near trees. But in your car, near buildings, or especially near trees you will not be that accurate, especially the older ones.

Renee is correct that you need to use it for the first time in an open area.
