I love maps. It's nice to see the Pines extended to Cape May, as they should be. This is hilarious! I'm Pineys...Pineys Everywhere with Alabama and Woods Ghetto rising. The wifey's Hill People.

Crap, that means they're trying to turn my Pineys' town into Ghetto through Smart Growth!

I'm in the "More Houses and County Clubs" with "Happy Whites" all around me. Not the greatest but better than some.

I'm still chuckling over "vast wilderness of rednecks and retired hippies."

I'm apparently in either "Lake Houses owned by New Yorkers," or "Executives Living in Mansions and Driving Mercedes Benzes." I'm surprised they would let me stay in either place.

I think woods ghetto must be referring to Newtonville and Mizpah. I have never lived in either place but I have heard that newtonville east of 54 deals drugs and wars against the whites across the highway in collings lakes who also deal drugs and thats why the put the state police barracks between them. I never looked at those areas as ghettos but more like pineys ebony style.

Manumuskin,

The area marked as Ghetto in the Woods is historically accurate, odd as this may seem. Ghetto’s are parts of cities where specific economic or social groups live. In Italy, the ghet was the island where Jews were allowed to stay in Venice. In the States ghetto was first used to describe Jewish neighborhoods. Starting in 1882, with the beginning of Russian pograms, many Jews bypassed American cities to settle the Pine Barrens. This back to the land movement was conceived as the new Israel.

I’ll be presenting on this topic at the April 11 Hamilton Township Historical Society meeting in Mays Landing. The talk, Come Ernest Homeseekers: Ethnic Settlements in the Pines, was developed for the PPA’s Pinelands Heritage Series. Libby Marsh, a Stockton Professor, called the southern Pinelands an ethnic archipelago for good reason.

Buena Vista Township (in the 1867 sense) had the first Pinelands ethnic hamlet (c.1848), Germantown, or Woolytown, so named for those wild and woolies who came from Prussia. Swiss Germans founded Buckhorn (c. 1880). East Vineland (c.1875), like most early Italian hamlets around Vineland (New Italy & Wheat Road, c. 1870), was comprised of stock from Northern Italy. Beginning around 1880, Southern Italians were enticed to develop farmland surrounding Hammonton. Northern Italians flocked to Landisville, Richland, Buena, and Milmay. Minotola, named for a fictional Minot Indian chief, was a glass factory town with mix of workers form throughout Italy. New Rome was to be Sicilian, along with nearby Gigantic City (north of Mizpah).

Newtonville and Mizpah were black charcoal camps. The former was formally laid out by Landis as farm plots with the coming of the Camden and Atlantic (1854). To learn about black/white dynamics there, see the download for:

The latter became Jewish (1891), then Italian (c.1897) and finally returned to Black after World War I.

Although poor, our towns are hardly ghettos. We have a strong sense of place and community, and most families have remained here for generations because of that. In another recent post I related how a young New Kuban lad recently perished in a terrible house fire. The the response from the surrounding communities has been stellar. For example, the funeral parlor had to double its allotted time for viewing just to handle attendees. He was buried in Friendship Church’s cemetery, with a dinner that evening at the Landisville fire hall. Our family has offered to put them up for a while, as have other neighbors. Everyone’s doing their part to help them get back on their feet. These are nice places, even if just a little rough around the edges.

Thanks Spung Man! I had always wondered why the newtonville/mizpah area was all black when all around it was white and that area was never a farming area to the best of my knowledge.I knew there had to be an explanation for it but didn't know why since the area wasn't urban i couldn't think of what jobs could have brought them there but the weymouth industry makes sense. It's odd that certain town down my way right next to each other are so different racially.Dividing creek is all white and always has been as far as I know but port norris has always been mixed 50/50.Then belleplain is another all white town (I used to live there as well as dividing creek) but woodbine right next door has many blacks and used to have jews and russians as well.An of course i live but a few miles from the Gouldtown Indian communtiy and some of them appear white, some black but none really look Indian.Read an account once stating they descended in part from John Fenwick (white) two blacks, one free and the other slave and on Indian from the west indies somewhere. They claim to be lenape which doesn't seem to jibe with historical facts. What a melting pot we be even if sometimes we boil.

newtonville/mizpah area was all black....when all around it was white and that area was never a farming area to the best of my knowledge

Newtonville was laid out as Colwell's (1854, aka Colville, later Elwood) agricultural lands. Amongst the earliest farms was one owned by Nelson Johnson's (Boardwalk Empire) progenitors. The hamlet was a cluster of small farms scattered near Jackson Road, with a Black presence to the northeast by the old cemetery. That cemetery probably dates at least back to the Landis lots (c.1854), but does show up on an 1882 Merton map in my possession.

what jobs could have brought them there but the weymouth industry makes sense.

Weymouth was switching from iron to other production. Germans were skilled industrial laborers, thus valued by businessmen. The Richards had strong ties to the Pennsylvania Dutch. It is no surprise that Weymouth Furnace's owners (married to Richards) were sympathetic to Germans at a time when many Americans weren't.

Then belleplain is another all white town

Belleplain was pine plains.

Some of its structures were plucked from another nearby Jewish colony called Halberton, where 100-foot now stands.

but woodbine right next door has many blacks and used to have jews and russians as well.

Woodbine was also a Black charcoal camp before became a Jewish colony (1891). It provided cordwood for West Jersey locomotives.

An of course i live but a few miles from the Gouldtown Indian communtiy and some of them appear white, some black but none really look Indian.

We have some Gouldtowner's here in Richland too! What a distinguished lineage. While some call this a melting pot, I think it better described a mighty fine machanka (Ukrainian for stew!).

I have been all over Halburton and outside of the old railroad grade3 and an old station have never found any cellar holes or remains.I wonder if they were all destroyed by the sand mining operations?
I have never been to or even by the Newtonville cemetery.I will have to check it out.I do like old cemeteries.I know of a kid who lived in newtonville,His father took an old cadillac junker and somehow put it 20 ft up in the branches of an old oak in front of the house and the kids used it as a tree house. Now thats African ingenuity there. I don't know the man personally but would love to know how he got that car up there:)
