All,

Since Budd Wilson is no longer with us I have decided to pass along some information that member "Turtle" passed on to me back in 2010. She had spoken with Budd and he informed her about what I will mention below. After receiving the info I visited the place on 5/8/2010 and again today, and one quick visit soon after 2010. Some of the info I may have discussed before; however, some of it I have not.

The Green Bank CCC camp was located in the NE corner of the woods at the intersection of 542 and 563 near the Green Bank Inn, and during WW2 the US Army had a military unit stationed there. After the state acquired Wharton, which at some point included this location, Budd Wilson, being the State Archaeologist, eventually moved into one of the buildings of the CCC camp along with his dog. This was sometime right before or during 1972. His job was to sort through and catalog all of the artifacts the state was finding in Wharton. The building was 20 X 120 and one story. There was a concrete ramp at the entrance to the building where the artifacts could be driven up and into the building if need be.

This is the concrete ramp in 2010 and today. The building would have been to the right in this photo. You can see the depression.

While living there Budd designed storage areas to accommodate the documents and relics found during excavations. He had plenty of room to do whatever he wanted and life was good according to Budd. Sometime after he moved in, Wharton maintenance decided they needed 1/3 of the building for storage of their own.

In 1974 Budd marries and moves out, taking some of his personal items with him including his personal library. Four years later, on July 10, 1978 Budd is working on a historical archeology project at Hancock House in Lower Alloways Creek Township when he gets a call from Sid Walker the Superintendent of Wharton to return to Wharton. When he arrives he is told that the building he had lived in was burned to the ground and almost everything is lost. Budd clearly recalls the stains of kerosene splashed on the side of the building nearest the maintenance area.

Budd also mentions a large concrete pad nearby that was used to keep heavy things. In 2010, shown in the below photo, you can see the concrete pad. Today it is totally covered.

In 2010 these Donkey Rails were located on the pad but within a few years they were gone. Some can still be found in Double Trouble and I know where there may be more in Green Bank but have not been able to access the area as of yet. I am hoping at some point Bob and I can give it a go and fight our way to the area to check.

Located on the side of the large concrete pad are many large very heavy mysterious pipes. But in reality there is no mystery about them. Budd claims these pipe were using in the Batsto Forge or Furnace located across from the Batsto Mansion and moved here during excavations. This photo is from today.

This boot was there 15 years ago and still there today.

There are other interesting things to see but I will not tell you all of them. However, below are some items that are no longer there.

I assume that is this place? It shows two rows of buildings. What does NYA mean? You can see one large slab/foundation on the LIDAR, maybe a couple buildings on the 1970 aerials, but they aren't very clear

I don't know what the NYA means but that is the place.

The black dot to the left of the road and to the left of NYA was the home of Horace Patten. The Wharton survey had his name spelled wrong as Patton. You can read about my visit there with manumuskin here.

It means National Youth Administration. I have to assume many were young men or older boys.

But just about all of the secrets are revealed on the 1940 aerials! :clint:
Maybe all of the secrets in an aerial view but there just may be others. :D

In the aerials you can basically see the property line around the edges. I looked yesterday for 3 of them and did not find them. But they are not the usual Wharton it appears so they may not even be there.

I have been reluctant to make these 1940 aerials into a map because they only cover Atlantic County (and that is not even quite complete). However, there are some very interesting things and the resolution is good. So, I'm downloading now and will make them into a small map.

But I'm in the middle of another big project and they're downloading really slow, so let's see how it's going when I return from my morning walk. If it's going to take more than a couple hours, I will have to bail and wait until next week when the other project is finished.

One of the main reasons we went again yesterday is because when we first walked the road in from the corner years ago, it was loaded with lady slippers. However, I believe they have cleaned up back there and plowed the road at some point scraping it. We did not travel all of the roads but were surprised to not find any sign of them. Scraping may be a problem.

The first time we were there we found this Coast & Geodetic Geodetic Survey monument laying in the open. The number on it is 17804. After checking where it originally was located we can see it was along the edge of 542 across from Batsto. Most likely when road work was done it was dug up and dumped at the location of this thread. We looked for it again but could not find it. However, it may still be there but I believe they cleaned up the area.

Notice it was not found on 2/10/1958. It was located on the inside curve of 542.

Guy, those hands above yours are interesting. Very long fingers and hand joint is very flexible. Your wife's or Jessica's? I feel like a Neanderthal when I see that. My fingers are short.
