All,
Since Budd Wilson is no longer with us I have decided to pass along some information that member "Turtle" passed on to me back in 2010. She had spoken with Budd and he informed her about what I will mention below. After receiving the info I visited the place on 5/8/2010 and again today, and one quick visit soon after 2010. Some of the info I may have discussed before; however, some of it I have not.
The Green Bank CCC camp was located in the NE corner of the woods at the intersection of 542 and 563 near the Green Bank Inn, and during WW2 the US Army had a military unit stationed there. After the state acquired Wharton, which at some point included this location, Budd Wilson, being the State Archaeologist, eventually moved into one of the buildings of the CCC camp along with his dog. This was sometime right before or during 1972. His job was to sort through and catalog all of the artifacts the state was finding in Wharton. The building was 20 X 120 and one story. There was a concrete ramp at the entrance to the building where the artifacts could be driven up and into the building if need be.
This is the concrete ramp in 2010 and today. The building would have been to the right in this photo. You can see the depression.
While living there Budd designed storage areas to accommodate the documents and relics found during excavations. He had plenty of room to do whatever he wanted and life was good according to Budd. Sometime after he moved in, Wharton maintenance decided they needed 1/3 of the building for storage of their own.
In 1974 Budd marries and moves out, taking some of his personal items with him including his personal library. Four years later, on July 10, 1978 Budd is working on a historical archeology project at Hancock House in Lower Alloways Creek Township when he gets a call from Sid Walker the Superintendent of Wharton to return to Wharton. When he arrives he is told that the building he had lived in was burned to the ground and almost everything is lost. Budd clearly recalls the stains of kerosene splashed on the side of the building nearest the maintenance area.
Budd also mentions a large concrete pad nearby that was used to keep heavy things. In 2010, shown in the below photo, you can see the concrete pad. Today it is totally covered.
In 2010 these Donkey Rails were located on the pad but within a few years they were gone. Some can still be found in Double Trouble and I know where there may be more in Green Bank but have not been able to access the area as of yet. I am hoping at some point Bob and I can give it a go and fight our way to the area to check.
Located on the side of the large concrete pad are many large very heavy mysterious pipes. But in reality there is no mystery about them. Budd claims these pipe were using in the Batsto Forge or Furnace located across from the Batsto Mansion and moved here during excavations. This photo is from today.
This boot was there 15 years ago and still there today.
There are other interesting things to see but I will not tell you all of them. However, below are some items that are no longer there.
