All,

If you saw the post where Bob invited anyone along for a 5 mile hike of the Parker Preserve today and you thought about coming, you should have acted on that thought. It was an interesting and eventful day.

We met at 9AM with the intention of completely traversing the outer edge of the bogs off of 532 which were at one time owned by Johathan Godfrey. Our first stop was the bench along the reservoir where we watched an amazing sight. If you had been there you would know what that was. Here is Jessica doing just that.

A view from my camera.

A very nice size pine tree.

Can you guess what that is in the very center of the photo sticking up above the trees?

Bob noticed this semi new path blazed through the woods, and we obviously could not pass by without checking it out. We just had to!

After a short walk we discovered this which Jessica had to examine.

A slight fear of heights.

While researching the trip after learning of it from Bob, I went to historicalaerials.com to look the place over. I always like to find thing that are still there today. After scanning around a little I noticed a few buildings from 1963 that might still be there, so I could not pass up going there. After finding a few ruins of old buildings, we finally came to one still intact.

Jessica took the initiative and barreled right into it.

A few other views. Jessica was already in there and we did not hear any screaming :)

The property line in that area is erratic, and this property is or was owned by someone else. Many years ago this fence and sign were placed there. Can you see this fence keeping out a rabbit?

We ate lunch in the shade along an old blueberry field, and then headed out for the final push to the end. On the route I noticed on my GPS we were coming to a property corner, and again I just had to check it out. I found this damaged concrete monument.

A panaramic of the place.

A wonderful day that may have been the highlight of the year. You all missed out on Bob’s call to join in. You may not want to miss his call when it comes again.

Nice photos Guy. I really enjoyed the 5 mile hike today with you and Jess. What a beautiful place that part of the Preserve is. That is a real treasure of South Jersey, that Parker Preserve. A great place to enjoy a sunny fall day. Here are some photos.

Wow, nice trip! I must have missed that invitation thread/post. I had my hands full with my two year old's birthday party today. Now, I've explored the bogs in the parker preserve west of 563 but I believe this is the area along 532 east of 563? I've been to some of the woods there but not the bogs yet.

If this is the case I belive that thing in Guy's photo above the trees would be the pioneer smelting water tower (if it is still standing).

Really enjoyed reading this report. I will have to get out there myself ASAP now!

Great report & pics. Thanks for sharing. I,too would've worried about chiggers approaching that building.

As for the property corner monument...That's my company's! Now I'll have to ask questions around the office!

My son and I were there for a short time, but I like to park at the 563 side and walk into the big reservoir. We were looking for otters, found none, then went up to the festival at Whitesbog. Would have been nice to meet.

I was going to guess that it's one of those cell towers made up to look sort of like a conifer.

Great pictures, Guy. Now... are you going to tell us what the "amazing sight" was? :)

Nice photos! I have not spent much time on that piece of the preserve, but will spend more in the winter exploring there. Was the trail you spoke of Guy the one on the right a little ways down from were Bob is hugging the pine tree?

I sent the link to our chief surveyor. I've been out of the office doing field work & nursing my dog after emergency surgery. When I get a chance to talk to him, I'll pick his brain. I mentioned it to my wife, who's the company's bookkeeper/controller. She asked what the job might be.......Guy, what it be considered Woodland Township?
I'll start digging as soon as I can!

I'm new to the site though I've been lurking here for some time. I enjoy hiking in the Pine Barrens and I am justing getting into photography. My wife and I have hiked the Parker Preserve on either side of Rt. 563 but have never gone to the Jonathan Godfrey Tract on Rt. 532. I know the area but I am not sure where you can park or where to enter. Any help is appreciated.

There is a gate a short way up the road where you must park. However, the road is semi tight there so pull as far off the road as you can since they do open the gate to have access to manage the place. You can walk anywhere you want on that property except where they fence off to protect some wildlife at certain times of the year.

There is a bench there where you can sit and enjoy the view. Unfortunately, the old house is gone so you will miss that.
