Alot of fire depts (volunteer, anyway) don't require psych exams. Biggest reason being, the dept. would have to pay for it, and most volunteer ones don't have that kind of money. All you have to do to join is fill out an application, give them your DL #, and thats it.
there is a LOT more to it than that....trust me...
The deal mainly, and I attribute this to years in the NYPD and doing some stuff with the NYPD arson squad, is that a lot of guys sign up for "the rush". When they realize it is not an everyday fire and there are a ton of BORING days in there they decide to make things "interesting".....
As to "giving them your DL# and that is it"...that is entirely NOT TRUE!!!!
Whatever volunteer you go to...no matter how off the beaten track..they REQUIRE you to pass your FF1 and in most cases your FF2.
You have to go through some semi-rigorous field tests and a bunch of written and other stuff. In the case of volunteers, the department pays for it, but if it is something you want to do on a full time basis and paid,...YOU have to pay for it....
Find me a department that you do not have to do this and I guarantee you that will change toot suite!!!
