Fisherman catches alligator at Hamilton Game Preserve

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - An Egg Harbor City fisherman got more than he bargained for Sunday when he cast his line in the waters along the Hamilton Game Preserve.
Township police said Jesse Deeney, 30, called them when an alligator became entangled in his fishing line Sunday morning.
Four township officers arrived at the preserve on New York Avenue at about 9:22 a.m. to find the alligator, measuring about three and a half feet in length, caught in the line.

Could an alligator survive a winter in the wild here? That little guy was probably lucky to have been caught.

The alligator can survive cool temperatures by going to the bottom of the lake or river. These are fresh water reptiles. They can slow their metabolism down, but there isn't much chance of surviving a NJ winter in the wild.

In the south they bury in the mud like a turtle and hibernate the winter away but in nj the water gets quite a bit colder at the bottom then in the south so the question is how cold can they get for how long?If they were capabl of surviving here they'd probably be here by now with all the ones people have turned loose over the years.I think they would do better in the tidal portions of our streams more so then in the Barrens.I doubt the Barrens has enough food to support a grown gator long in any one place,Then again it's not like they have to eat everyday like a mammal.
