Just riding around Whitesbog with the A/C on. The wild rice caught my eye with the purple and orange petals.

Ahhh.....no Grasshopper...not petals, but stigma and stamen (girls and boys). And, I think I'm wrong about it being rice....some other grass (Poaceae).

Scirpus cyperinus
Sabatia difformis
Hypericum densiflorum
Lobelia nuttallii

Orchids are starting to bloom!

After almost a month absence from the pines because of Jennifer's illness, Jessica and I headed to the location where Bob and I found the Yellow Crested Orchids last year. This is almost three weeks earlier than last year; however, as we saw from oji's post they are around. Unfortunately, I did not see any on our travels today and I am hoping they will show up eventually. We did continue on to the White Orchid paradise, and Jessica decided there were way too many there. She wanted Bob to sweat a little to find some.

Not what I was hoping for but Jessica liked it.

You'd better take that knife away from her!

Were there any in full bloom? It is early.

No. And I did not see many because they were not in bloom. They all look like the one in my photo. Once they bloom I am sure we will see more of them.

I am concerned about the Yellow unless they were there but it is way too early. Because of that I did not walk around too much so that I did not step on things that I should not have. Maybe next weekend or the next. It was 8/1 when we found them.

Guy, Do you remember what time it was when you photographed the Sundew? I have been told from 1 1/2 hours before and after 12:00 are the best time. I was surprised to see the white blooming but the yellow was really surprising.

Tipularia discolor-Cranefly Orchid, from 6 feet up these look like twigs stuck in the ground.
