Hi oji.....I was really interested in this plant. Have never seen it. Shortia galacifolia or "Oconee Bells". Fairly out of range....seems like it is more viewed in N. Virginia and S. Maryland. Either way, it's a rare bird. Took me a while to find it in resources. I defer to Bob for proper ID, but the USDA plant site looks right on. Nice photos!

Well, it is a farming community, and those trains were liable to bring anything in from up North. Still, it is an interesting plant. My audubon book indicates it could well be Claytonia virginica (Spring Beauty).

Bob has shown me a few of those. I recognize them. I looked up what I thought they were and it does not look at all like them. Something like twayblade but that is not correct????

EDIT: They are similar to Sand Yellow Eyed Grass but that is rare.

By all means. Do you see the parallel-veined leaves on the one on the right? That means a monocot, probably a lily. It will be interesting to see what that is.

Tom, they are not grasses, they are sedges. From what I can see, they appear to be too early Carex pennsylvanica. They could also be Carex umbellata (variety tonsa). I go with the latter for now.
