It's likely not what you think it is Tom, but you'll enjoy the historical aspect. You'll get a kick out some of the photos and the places he mentions though, so its good to have in your collection. But he "usually" only uses latin names and most of it deals with more of an environmental study of the pines flora. It can be dry, but also fun at times. The photos are not real clear, but some of the pygmy pines photos are shocking at how low they were back then.

I took that book out of the millville library several times as a teenager and often wondered where the photo was taken of a pond in the pygmy plains.the only pond I know of now that looks anywhere similar to it is Govenors pond but i don't think thats the place because the hill at Govenors is a lot higher and the pond is wider.
