Forsythe Refuge

Yesterday my wife and I hit the Forsythe Refuge in Galloway. I wanted to try out my camera a little bit and scope out the snow goose situation for the upcoming special season that will run to April.
As I suspected, the main entrance to the visitor area and the loop road were closed and unplowed.
We parked at the gate and walked in to the new visitors center and down to the new boardwalk trail. I did the topograhic survey for the construction of those improvements a little over a year ago and it was good to see them built.
The new visitor center can be seen in the background of the first photo.
No snows to be seen or heard.

In keeping with the forum rules I placed these non-pines photos on Photobucket and I am linking to there.
Let's hope this works.
I took l photos of the red cedar grove along the entrance road and the new trail.
Later I went down to Scott's Landing and tried the 40x digital zoom on my Canon SX120 from a tripod on a heron.
They came out a little better than I expected but still not great.
The greenheads are with the 10x optical zoom.

Yes, quacking greenheads are much more fun then the insect with the same name.

The consultant I did the surveying work for was from Maine and he had never heard of greenheads. When I submiited our proposal to him I told him that the price was pre-greenhead hatch and that I would have to charge more after the hatch for the misery factor and the slower productivity that would come with it.
Luckily we completed our work pre-hatch.

I did a topo job for another consultant for a boardwalk trail the same year in the Cape May Refuge by the Loran tower off of Ocean Drive.
We didn't get that lucky on that one.
I was running a quart low after that job, between the flies and the salt marsh mosquitoe attacks.

So good to see these shots of a place that holds many memories for us. We often took our children to watch the birds there, especially the snow geese, back when it was simply "the Brigantine Refuge."

Thanks for the update on the new visitor's center and boardwalk, and for the photos of the ducks and the heron. Looks like they're still making themselves at home!
