All,

I took off work today, and along with Rob who I work with we spend the day hiking and exploring the Great Swamp. By 8AM we were in the woods SE of Dutchtown bushwhacking our way into the swamp. Our first find was this large deer stand similar to one we found on a previous PBX hike.

Rob checking it out.

One of the hundred’s of Savannahs.

The ice was 3/4 of an inch thick and was almost holding our weight.

Our next stop was the one Burlington County Monument I have not visited in that area of the pines. Number 63 has now been visited.

Then we visited the most NW corner of the Rockwood tract to check it out. This area is the rectangular lot shown here on Google. Look closely.

There was so much water the savannahs were draining out.

We finally made it to the large savannah area shown here.

I can tell you there is not a water shortage in the pines. We walked in water for all 6 hours, most of it close to the top of our knee high boots. But we were not at work, we were in the pines....what more could I ask for. An exhausting and interesting day. Did I mentioned we were not at work :)

My GPS says 5.5 miles, Rob's showed less than that.

We parked here at the curve on state property just before private property.

Then headed east directly into the woods and explored in the area around the county line and the old rectangular bog area. Then south to the large savannahs and all around that area and back to the car.

We get back to the car and noticed that the township of Hammonton had graded the road while we were gone and since I only parked a few feet off the road they came right by and close to my car with the grader. Just happen to do it the day I park there :) They came by and waved as we were taking our gear off. The grader was still there when we left.

You can eat off that road most of the time.
I think the Hammontonians that hunt out of the Boot Hill trailer have some pull.
That looked like a nice slog Guy.
This is one wet year.

Very nice Guy.
Good shots and apparently a good day. good for you.
But you are a devil. Enjoying the goods almost in my back yard on a day when I was stuck in the office. Bugger !

Nice pics, I especially like those savanahs. I really need to get out there this spring to search for reptiles, I would think those savanah's would have a good amount of wildlife around them.
