Friendship Bogs

All,

Visited a few of the bogs and canals early this morning. On our way down Carranza the smoke from the Tea Time Hill fire was pretty thick in one section. Also, Carranza Road needs scraping.

Anyway, as expected we were able to walk places we have never been able to before.

Why take the road when this was easier.

There were ice crystals in various locations.

Quite a few of them and they were not very shy.

We spent most of our time in the far south reservoir.

An old boat is out there towards the middle. It looks home made but may not be.

We then switched bogs and came closer to Friendship.

I don't keep the sound on with my dash cam so you really can't get the full idea how fast and loud the car was on our way out to the pines this morning.

I’ve seen that type of ice several times before. One time on the banks of the Mullica we were walking close to the waters edge on what looked like sand. Only to find out it was ice that had lifted the sand. It was crushed under our weight and we would drop 4-5 inches in spots. Thanks, I’ve always wondered what it was called.

The orange dirt in some area's, mainly along the edges, is disappearing and the original sand is starting to show. It makes the road look damp. I hate driving on the road anymore.

Revited the area this morning and stopped at a few places along the way. This area had more water and treacherous mud.

The beaver completely covered the locks except for the top.

Is this tree being used to climb with a tree stand?? I am 4 feet from a cellular game camera watching my every move.

A Lions mane mushroom going bad.

About 11 years ago I found one of the Wharton survey monuments in the center of a canal completely underwater. I could just read the stamped NJ273W on it. When the canal was built they were slightly off the property on what at the time was most likely Joseph Wharton's land.

It was tough going but we were able to get there again today to find it next to what most likely is the original wooden post for the property corner. Unfortunately, the concrete is crumbling.

The charactors are hard to see.

It is really remote but nice to admire.

We spent another early morning at Friendship Bogs walking across a reservoir that is now dry. The walking here was easy and mostly solid. If you think you would enjoy walking it, now is the time to go.

In the middle is an old duck blind that you can't see on aerial photos and can't get to without walking across a flooded reservoir, except for now. There are three homemade seats and two of them are set aside as if the last person to use it was there by themself.

This section was must wetter and we could not walk it. I sunk up to me knee and walked around the rest of the day with wet feet.
