All,
Today I started on new project to find the stones at a cranberry bog that the state acquired in it’s entirety on 10/20/2000. Well, that may not be true since it appears that the previous owner, or at least an owner of a piece of property there has lifetime rights to remain. At least that is what my records say.
Anyway, we drove as close as we could and walked the rest of the way there, finding an old fence that at one time must have completely encircled it. You can see the fence in this photo, along with the post and the distant post.
Our first attempt at finding a stone was fruitless, so we headed to number 2. Along the way we encountered this.
Stone 2 was a success which Jessica found.
Jessica on a road less traveled that we came upon.
Most of the time we were walking the edge of the bog, but in the woods a short distance. Off in the distance in the bogs something caught my eye that seemed out of place. A little maneuvering between the trees and I was able to see it, but what was it?
A closer examination revealed that it is a wind turbine. Rusted and disabled, it apparently was used to pump water from the ground. There are gauges, pipes, and cut electrical lines at the base, and the rusting metal had turned the large cement base into what looked like a solid rusted piece of cement. To get to it you have to maneuver down an embankment and cross a small span of water, and getting back up is slightly more tricky. Easy for me but Jessica stayed behind.
Just a portion of the bog.
Attempts to find one more stone failed so we called it a day there. We had made one more stop in the area and headed for home, when I noticed smoke in the sky like a forest fire. After a few minutes I was able to determine that it most likely was along Jackson Road near Atco dragway. I altered my route and soon we came up a controlled burn right near the dragway in the area of the big fire last year.
Jessica had her video camera so we walked up to one of the men who was performing this, and he gave us a rushed and unrehearsed description of what was going on. You can view it either from my website at the first link, or youtube at the second link. If you choose my site give it a few seconds to load.
