From Bogs to Burn

All,

Today I started on new project to find the stones at a cranberry bog that the state acquired in it’s entirety on 10/20/2000. Well, that may not be true since it appears that the previous owner, or at least an owner of a piece of property there has lifetime rights to remain. At least that is what my records say.

Anyway, we drove as close as we could and walked the rest of the way there, finding an old fence that at one time must have completely encircled it. You can see the fence in this photo, along with the post and the distant post.

Our first attempt at finding a stone was fruitless, so we headed to number 2. Along the way we encountered this.

Stone 2 was a success which Jessica found.

Jessica on a road less traveled that we came upon.

Most of the time we were walking the edge of the bog, but in the woods a short distance. Off in the distance in the bogs something caught my eye that seemed out of place. A little maneuvering between the trees and I was able to see it, but what was it?

A closer examination revealed that it is a wind turbine. Rusted and disabled, it apparently was used to pump water from the ground. There are gauges, pipes, and cut electrical lines at the base, and the rusting metal had turned the large cement base into what looked like a solid rusted piece of cement. To get to it you have to maneuver down an embankment and cross a small span of water, and getting back up is slightly more tricky. Easy for me but Jessica stayed behind.

Just a portion of the bog.

Attempts to find one more stone failed so we called it a day there. We had made one more stop in the area and headed for home, when I noticed smoke in the sky like a forest fire. After a few minutes I was able to determine that it most likely was along Jackson Road near Atco dragway. I altered my route and soon we came up a controlled burn right near the dragway in the area of the big fire last year.

Jessica had her video camera so we walked up to one of the men who was performing this, and he gave us a rushed and unrehearsed description of what was going on. You can view it either from my website at the first link, or youtube at the second link. If you choose my site give it a few seconds to load.

My site. You need Quicktime.

Nice photos, I like when everything is frozen like this. It allows some access to areas I can't always venture into. What is very interesting is if you scroll down on that youtube page, there is a pine snake swimming on a pond. Something I've never seen. I especially find it amusing that these guys say with extreme confidence that it is a water moccasin.

That's some cool stuff! There were doing a controlled burn near my home today as well - looked like it was near Cumberland Ave not far from Route 50.

I saw that. I guess they must have realized what it was before they uploaded it since the titled it a misspelled "Nothern Pine Snake".

Very interesting Guy, nice photos also. Why do you suppose there is controversey over the ownership? Did you not want to post the location until it is certain the state owns it? How large of a tract is it?

The state owns it, I have text proof of that. It was acquisition number 724. The bogs are not flooded, the pump house buildings are empty, the irrigation valves are all open, etc, etc.

Access to it is limited and there is some activity on one end. Giving the location out does not seem prudent to me.

That windmill (turbine) is really cool. Evans & Will (owners of Friendship) had tried to use a windmill to draw water from a small stream that ran through their Medford property. Reports called the effort a "failure".

We went back to the same area today and we stumbled onto this “shack’ used by apparently quite a few hunters.

They had a large area where there were multiple fire pits and tables.

main.php

main.php

They even had an outdoor kitchen sink.

And later we visited an old abandoned house and I noticed that the date inscribed in the porch was 50 years ago yesterday.
