On Sept. 7 my bf and I decided to hike part of the batona trail. We started in ongs hat. The trail didn't seem to be marked very well and after an hour wound up at the car. We finally found the trail and had a nice walk till we got to the part where we were to cross 72 and finish the last 4 miles or so. But there was a sign stating that the trail had been rerouted. We looked for the next connection but could not find it. We wound up taking a side road into Chatswort and from there to 532 and to our next vehicle. Can anyone fill us in on where we should have picked up the trail as we would like to try again.

The trail head at Ongs is not obvious and is near the road. At Rt 72 you cross and walk to the left, toward the shore. It is marked and in a short while you turn right into the forest.

Thank you for the information. It is very. Helpful. We are definitely going to try again in a couple weeks.
as soon as you cross 72 you turn left and follow the road for a couple hundred yards and then the trail turns right into the woods as shown on the map above.The old trail is still visible right across the road but is now unblazed and growing in fast.
Unfortunately September is the worst month for chiggers. They'll be gone once we get a frost or a few nights in the 30's, which usually occurs in mid/late October.
Yesterday I saw a car pulled off to the side of the road with a father and his young son standing in the knee-high grass, getting ready for a hike. I thought, "man you are not gonna be happy when you get home". 
The permethrin and DEET will help, but you just have to avoid any grass that is higher than your ankle. This has been a terrible year for chiggers. But aren't they all?

Bob or Guy one posted a most awesome macro shot on here once of a blade of grass covered with them,feelers extended to hook onto the camera.
Here you go Al. Also, today I got chigged down by Egg Harbor when I stepped into the woods off of 561 to releive myself. That is all it took. I brushed them all off, as I always wear light and look down at the spot above my knee frequently. That spot just above the knee is tempting to them.
