Frost

All,

Did you have frost this morning? My car windows were frozen over with a thin but hard glaze. I had the windshield squirters and wipers on for quite a while to clear it off. If this occured in the pines we have billions of chiggers in their grave

I don't think it got quite that cold here, but I got home very late Sunday night and slept late Monday so I can't be sure. It was certainly in the mid 30's though, and appears to be the same again tonight.

Yeah, I think the chiggers may be gone too. I spent awhile wandering around in the rain on Friday afternoon without taking precautions and no problems.

We had a solid one, had to really let the car warm to get it off.
Chill in the air this morn' for certain. My hot peppers pretty much bit the bullet last night but I have a little basil & hardy Broccoli Rabe still holding it's own. Maybe the season has decided to make an appearance.

Well there was a coating of frost on the car windows this morning. Fired up the defroster, went back into the house for a couple minutes to grab some things and it had melted when I came back out....

So what's the verdict? Woods safe again? Thinking of going back to Amatol & Fries Mill one of these upcoming weekends.

No sign of anything resembling a chigger here for quite awhile; I have abandoned my usual precautions of treated clothes and tucking pants into socks. It was 28 degrees this morning at my place, has been down in that range overnight for most of the week.

Jess and I had multiple ticks last weekend on us. They were sluggish so we were able to get them off quite easily. So they are still around.

That's interesting. Evidently things are a little different down South. I haven't seen ticks since August, and I've been through lots of places where I would expect to get them in the spring.

It must depend on where you are. While looking for the phone we did not get any, but as soon as we entered near Jackson Road we got them.

Yep. I concur. The ticks will take a sustained killing frost. I think the chiggers are totally wasted now though. Yay winter!

Not sure about respective regions but yes, last night here was the killing frost in my opinion. Lotsa black, dead plants. Potted & brought in the last of my Basil Just in time. Even the Broccoli Rabe took a beating & it is very hardy. I haven't been out in it, but I'm guessing the pests are done.
I hope so for all you deep woods trekkers.

I hiked round trip from Batona Camp to Lower Forge last Saturday. No chiggers, but I pulled about 15 ticks off my clothing.

I'm planning a 15 mile hike on the Batona Trail tomorrow. I know it dipped down into the 20's this past week, so hopefully that will have knocked down the tick population a bit.

Well I hiked round trip from Basto to Lower Forge today. Found one tick on my pants, which is not too bad considering how often your legs rub against the underbrush on that section of the Batona Trail.

Went back to Amotol yesterday - one tick. Hiked 3+ miles round trip to & from Fries Mill - no ticks.

I love fall/winter.
