Here is some interesting excerpts from that book I bought last Spring.
"Memories of Mount Misery" From "Snakes and Snake Hunting". Karl Kauffeld. Hanover House, 1957
"As early as 1928, when I was a schoolboy in Philadelphia, Ace directed me to the Mount Misery Den.....there was no route 70 then"
"What I did not realize was the amazing fascination that Mount Misery holds for rattlesnakes.......(they) were attracted to this den like iron to a magnet"
"Their gathering at Mount Misery in numbers may be exeptional-unique as far as I know"
Two pillowcases were now holding snakes. A third time we began the procedure of catching and bagging. This time a fourth rattlesnake, also lying nearby, became aroused to the point where he started to rattle and actually advanced on us while we were catching the third snake.........we thought we might as well return to the car with our 'singing' bags."
He also describes the den in great detail, not to be repeated here. If anyone is up for a little thrashing about in this area in a couple weeks, I am off from work. We can bring our lunches, build a little fire for coffee too. Thats always a neat thing to do.
