BEAUFORT, North Carolina (Reuters) -- Nearly three centuries ago, the notorious pirate Blackbeard ran aground in his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, off what is now a North Carolina beach town.

This month, a crew of 13 heads out to sea each day, hoping for clear-enough weather to dive the 20 to 25 feet to the ocean bottom to excavate what they believe is Blackbeard's ship.

The team has found cannons, a bell, lead shot of all sizes, gold dust, pewter cups and medical devices, like a urethral syringe used to treat syphilis with mercury.

<SNIP>...One day I plan to find and horde Blackbeard's treasure that he buried along the Mullica. ...<SNIP>

I think it may have been in The Lure of Long Beach Island that I read (many years ago) that, based on the finding of some tar--encrusted cannonballs that were covered in silver coins, it was thought that the treasure was buried somewhere south of Holgate...

Based on what Ben wrote, all you might find are a case of slightly used urethral syringes and a half--gallon of mercury.:D

To dig up an old thread my grandson is heavy into pirates, his teacher last year heard him talking about Blackbeard and sh informed him there never was such a person as Blackbeard in the meantime she informed him that leprechauns really did bury gold at the end of the rainbow.I'm dead serious. Now knowing a litle of pirates myself i told him there was a blackbeard regardless of what Miss batchelors degree told him and that he had been know to frequent the coast of NJ as well as the whole eastern seaboard.I have read rumors that he ascended the Mullica for drinking water and I see Gabe has heard something of the sort as well. Are there any truth to these rumors of Blackbeard being a part time Piney?Could a pirate ship ascend as high as the Forks?Freshwater probably made it much further downstream then anyway due to sea level rise. The Forks back then may have been as narrow as upstream then?As for treasure the Mullica is treasure enough.I'd rather not find it if it's there,it would really irk me to know end when Uncle Sam stuck his hand out.I'd piss in it and get myself in a heap of trouble.

Well I've heard that he was partying in Burlington City and the treasure is somewhere around there. As a kid I thought maybe he snuck up the Rancocas to hide the treasure.

Did Blackbeard ever sail up the Mullica or another South Jersey river? It's possible. It is said that he and other pirates, such as Captain Kidd, found refuge in the bays and sounds along our coast. It is also said that Kidd was anchored at the mouth of the Mullica when he was betrayed by a crew member and was forced to flee back to sea. If these ships could get to the mouth, then they could certainly sail up the river some ways, especially considering that the upper river was deeper back then. But I'd guess that pirates would only go as far up our rivers as was necessary to fetch fresh water, and Al is right about the fresh water reaching considerably further downstream in those times.

As for treasure the Mullica is treasure enough.

Amen, my Piney brother. Amen.

I know the sea level was lower then and I have read the water table was higher.Don't know how much water the Queen Anne drew.Perhaps he turned right and went up the Wading? How would you ascertain where the water is fresh enough?Once Spartina disappears?Where Arum appears? H could have even anchored at the entrance to the river near where the parkway crosses now and sent lifeboats up the river to get water. From what I read he was even scarier looking then the face at left.Lit matches and hung em under his hat.Wonder if he ever caught his beard on fire?

Argh me maties,

My wife, of old Jersey Dutch stock (1656), is purportedly a descendent of Captain Kidd, through the marriage of Jonathan S. Roll and Lucinda Kidd, September 4, 1851. Baltus Roll, namesake of the private PGA golf course in Westfield is also a relative. Baltus was a beloved albeit dirt-poor farmer who was murdered during a robbery. It was a sensational saga that became the OJ Simpson case of the early 1800s.

No kidding,

Are you talking about BobPBX? Yeah, he comes around once in a while to pick flowers.
Bob
I think you were just called a flower picking butt pirate??? Don't let it get you down.I used to be a glorified turd burglar driving pump truck for Russel Reid/Mr.John. I once worked on the set to the movie "The Village" With Segourney Weaver in it.I pumped poop for the whole set.Believe me,everyones poop stinks, even Segourney's.
Nasty job.Now someone else can do it.
