Last minute outing today 3-5-06.
Headed out to Friendship Bogs to do come caching with the wife and dog.
We'll be there by 1:00 p.m.
If you see a Red F-350 flag me down, or if you see two people and a springer walking, run us over.
:)
I will try and post some photos later.

Well Steve, now I know why you like Friendship so much.
I could spend a month back there. Actually, I think I could live back there.
We got there at one and left at around 5.
We hit some of the more remote spots by following the dikes out to the west and then headed south.
We ran into a little Deliverance scenario at the edge of one of the bogs and my wife was spooked for the rest of the day.
Two guys, one about 60 the other about 35 were broke down in a full size Ford van that really didn't look like it belonged back there.
The hood was up and they said they came back to fish and when they went to leave, no go.
I asked them if they had any one coming to help them and they said yes.
The younger guy said: "I taught I herd sumwun cumin' up da road wen I seen youz."
My dogs tail went down and he started cowering. He actually tried to jump in the bog and swim away. The dog, not Billy Bob. :)
He is usually a good judge of character and I think he smelled a character.
Oh well. I mapped a way out that didn't include walking by them again.
Another great day in the Big Woods and what a beautiful area.
Here are some pics.

Steve
The banjos were definitely playing in my wife's head.
When we got to the SWesternmost corner of the bogs, she kept looking over her shoulder thinking we were being tracked.
She started calming down when I expalined that we didn't have to out the way we came in.
I want to return later in the spring and give the pickerel a whirl.

I spend alot of time in the friendship bogs also. One time I came across a couple (husband and wife?) who had broken down back there. I wouldn't say they were as Deliverence like as the people you ran into, but something was a bit "off kilter" with these people, I think they were living out of their truck. I was with my sister and she was really freaked out.

I had broken down back there myself one time and walked about 2 miles when I was fortunite enough to come upon some good ol' boy type hunters that were kind enough to jump my battery. I guess Friendship is a popular place to break down.

Nice pictures of the bogs. Where are the friendship bogs? I would like to check it out sometime this week. If anyone could give me a rough idea where it is I would appreciate it. Thanks

Jeff

The thing that looked "off kilter" with these two was that the old guy was dressed very neatly, almost like a hefty L.L. Bean poster boy, while the younger guy looked like he just pulled the rear out of a dump truck.
They didn't look like best buds or father and son.

Anywho, I really want to get back there again and try for some pickerel.
I noticed a few blinds out there too so I would imagine that it gets some pretty good duckin' pressure.
Have you duck hunted there?
By the way, I replaced the first photo in my post. Somehow I linked to someone else's photo.

Pass Carranza and after driving on the dirt section for a few miles it comes to a bridge and a sharp left turn. You go straight.

Boyd gave you the topo map, and you may want to take an aerial map also. Here is google but I like topozone for better clarity actually. Their server is down for some reason right now so here is google.

http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=39.741168,-74.586493&spn=0.024716,0.041456&t=k

You should know that from the road you will never see the bogs so you want an aerial map to know where to park and walk around. The lower bog in the above link has some really nice savanahs so make sure you check them out.

Also, on your way in from Carranza road you will enter a swamp and the road will have an "s" turn in it. Right after you leave the swamp and "s" turn, take the very sharp road to the left and after a short distance look in the clearing on your left for something large with writing on it.

Wear hiking boots....it is wet around there.

I was just looking over some info I have here, and much of Friendship Bogs was not acquired by the state until 6/81 (acquisition #518). The names were Evans and Wills.

And there are still a few property stones that I have not looked for that I may search for soon. Jes has off from college next week so I may take a day off and search. I will keep you informed on what I find.
