I enjoy philosophical (not political) debates. It was fun to come up with a response. :)

It is cool that everybody has their opinions...I do also, but hey, isn't this a pine barrens oriented site?

Man, that sums up my feelings perfectly. If I wanted to hear people on political soapboxes I would hang out on some other website.

All I can say is "welcome Ed!"

What I find "scary" is that people can devote so much energy to crack-pot causes like protecting the interests of circus elephants (really, read one of their forums about tracking circuses).
There is no shortage of human suffering and mistreatment of children in this world, including right here in the United States.
Changing the life of a child or helping a family in need through devotion of time and other resources, is more beneficial to society than making sure Jumbo has fresh water.

The way we treat this planet and its animal life is in direct correlation to the way we treat each other. By not living in some type of harmony with the natural world how can we expect to do any bettter with each other?
The elephant has played many roles with man. It fought, traveled, and lived with us for a long time. Circus' are to stupid to realize pushing a big emotional animal into situations it wont like can cause a rampage.
I do believe elephants can live in sanctuary's and certain zoo's. Many of my close friends and family work in Zoo's. They all help teach us the world is a better place with a variety of life.

I apologize for hijacking the thread and ramming a pipe through the spokes of the wheels of the welcome wagon. I don't apologize for anything else.
As you can see, it doesn't take much to fire me up.

While I tend to disagree with you at times Scott, I do honestly admire your stance on certain things, like helping the poor and downtrodden (especially those who are our neighbors) and your concern for the environment.

Welcome Ed!

But, I disagree that we should bottle up everything non-pine barren related. I do enjoy knowing more about the people on this site; what their thoughts are, how they feel on certain broad issues, what their general thinking process is, etc. Lets not be just a technical, boring site. May as well just talk about, and act like, rocks.

I'm surprised that nobody has commented how it's great that I haven't closed the thread yet.

Hey, Ben,
Since y'brung it up...

I'm really pleased that the thread has continued.

I've thought, several times, about jumping in, but must admit that most of the points I was going to make have already been made with concision and clarity. It is a real pleasure to be a member of this group that so freely and articulately, and civily shares considered opinions on such a variety of topics deserving of consideration - even if they don't all relate directly to what one or the other of us feels is or should be central to our collective love of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. We always manage to get back to things "piney" and, in the process, our philosophical and intellectual horizons have been expanded - often in unexpected directions. I suspect that, in the end, we're all the better for it.

So thanks, Ben, for the loose reins.
Best t'y'all,
Dave

After careful consideration, and some reflection time, I decided to remove my previous posts from this thread. The reason, in its essence, has nothing to with this particular website, but rather centers on the fact that I am often "googled" by clients and co-workers. My fear was that, in searching my name, someone would turn up this thread and take what I'd posted entirely out of its context, thereby completely losing my intent. With the "hot button" topics that were being discussed, I decided it best to remove anything inflammatory from the internet. :)

At any rate, I wanted to post an explanation as to why I removed my previous posts.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone. I always enjoy a little controversy, so took no offense at Scott's remarks, which served to generate lots of energetic replies. I notice that I am listed as having joined in April, 2006. Actually, I've been a member for years, but not having posted before, I imagine my original membership was dropped at some point.

Welcome, Ed.

I was reading an article in the latest edition of National Geographic about African poachers. There was a gruesome picture of a de-tusked elephant. Enough to make a man weep, I'd say.

Very odd, Boyd. I must have been tired when I saw this thread because I could have sworn it was a new one! I saw edpipeline online last nite too. Strange coincidence, I'd say.
