Hiking the Featherbed Branch

A group of us did some exploring near and at the bogs along the Featherbed Branch off of Carranza road near Friendship. I got out there at 7AM and took photo's of the ruins along Carranza Road near Sandy Ridge, and also one of a state marker I found.

At 8:30 we headed into the woods and soon came upon another saw mill location.

After an hour or so we were deep in the briars and bush when I took this photo of what we had to go through. My face now shows some war wounds from it.

We explored the bogs and visited this interesting cedar swamp.

No....you don't have to search in that area.

I liked the cedar swamps we went through. The briars and brush around those bogs are severe. Not like Friendship Bogs or some other where people walk all the time. For being so close to Carranza road, nobody appears or could walk around them, except idiots like us.

Other than the saw mill foundations we did not find anything especially interesting from the past.

You should have tried to make it.......a good time.

Well, we did get a taste of that brand of bog on Steve's last hike.......

MY HANDS HURT !

well the "wander" meet it objective

to follow the old motorcycle trail through the swamp to the featherbed bogs and across them

Guy's pic of the terrain around the swamp side of the bog does not do it justice, it was "evil"

the attemp to cross the second dike (first one was washed out) to the other side did the trick

i say attempt because the dike was impassable due to cat briers and other stuff and retreating and trying to get to the next dike was out of the question so we climbed down the bank and walked through the bog and across what looked like a bever dam with Jeff leading the way

then we had to visit "ore spung" at that point we found a better way of crossing the bogs ! up ferther Guy took those great pics of the burm separating the swamp and the "feather bed"
