The History Channel is running a program about "Days that Shook the World" and they had a segment about the Hindenburg. Pretty neat to see Lakehurst mentioned on TV, especially when you figure that most people say to themselves "where the hell is Lakehurst, NJ?" Anyway, one of the more interesting things they talked about besides the crash was that at the public viewing of the caskets a lot of Americans gave the Nazi salute and there were lots of Nazi flags hung in the hangar as well. It's understandable considering that in 1937 most Americans either didn't have a clue or didn't care what Hitler was about and figured it was a way to show respect, but still very weird to see.

Yeah, think about it.... Lakehurst was an international airport back then! In a way, it's a good thing the airships didn't really catch on because that whole area might be a lot more developed today ;)

Then there was the other plan described by McPhee to put a Newark-sized airport and a city to support it in the area around Bear Swamp Hill...

Many, many Americans supported Hitler. Henry Ford, for example.

Over in Germany, anything nazi related is banned. At the Berlin airport, there is a cafe with an airship theme. On all of the photos, the swastika on the stern rudder of the air ships is whited out.

as late as 1939,the us was not at war with germany. one of the more fascinating photos of the time, is of the hindenburg, tail swastikas and all, hovering over new york city and the empire state building. strom
