Back in the day, I offered a set of banjo strings under the "Ong's Hat" label. As I recall, I said something to the effect of ONG, falling asleep under a tree, when the Jersey Devil was up and about. All they found of poor Ong was his hat---and a devilishly good set of banjo strings.

(They didn't sell very well .) :(

Did you actually read that Wikipedia post you linked to? ;)

In his 1944 book, Jersey Genesis, Beck himself says in reporting on Ong's Hat he fell for "elaborate traps" and that the story he had earlier repeated was a "fairy tale". He then subscribes to the explanation that the name is a corruption of Ong's Hut, a stopover point for a farmer from Little Egg Harbor

No wind here yet, but man is it ever raining hard. Was out in the woods when it started around 4:00 PM. Came back in as it started coming down harder along with thunder and lightning. Really didn't think much about it until I look out the window just now and saw the water rising in my yard. Looking at my digital rain gauge, we've had .34 inches of rain in the last half hour - that's a lot! Forecast was only calling for .10 inch today. Still coming down, but radar looks like it will let up before too long.

Ong's Hat: John McPhee said that after a dance a girl got mad at a guy named Ong and squooshed his hat and tossed it up in a tree and it stayed there, and so they eventually started calling the settlement Ong's Hat.

The winds never developed here overnight. Right now they are variable, all over the place, 5-10mph with gusts to 16-18. Looking like a very nice day.
