Hey everyone, I finally did it! Pretty soon I'll be moving back down to Mercer County because I'm all done up here. I'm the first in my family with my brother following close behind. Can't wait to do some exploring this summer...

Sounds like you may have attended FDU or Drew... Now, all you have to do is to figure--out how you can apply all that knowledge to get a job that will provide you (and your family) with a comfortable lifestyle, while allowing you to save enough for retirement...

Congratulations!

What was your major, your minor(s)?

Ha! Drew...I wish I were that rich. I majored in secondary social studies education with a minor in political science at Caldwell (small Catholic college in Essex County) College. The job market is a bit tight for humanities teachers at the secondary level right now, so I'm actually trying to pursue a job in either state government or the private sector doing something along the lines of education policymaking. I have an interview with a lobbying firm in Trenton in June so I'm looking forward to it. Now I just have to figure out what I want to get my Master's in. I was thinking about public administration if I end up working in government-who knows, maybe I'll be on the Pinelands Commission someday :pigfly:

Badfish,

I guess St. Elizabeth's has not yet gone coed? :(

Education policymaking is a "crock," unless you're some kind of a "minority," and "fit--in" with those promoting their current line of "hooey." It is really quite interesting: In 1992--1994 the State was employing "educational policy" that had been made 25 or so years earlier. However, at the middle school level, during the same time period, I saw "experimental classes" that were the result of the efforts of the current bunch in power (in Trenton) collaborating with "progressives" in local school districts. I was N O T impressed, nor was I impressed at what I experienced at the secondary level, either.

If this country is to survive, our educational system must be "tweaked" to promote "stand--alone" academics. Unfortunately, the system is being "dumbed down" to accommodate those who are "underachievers," those who are not interested in academic pursuits, and those who are "anti--establishment" ("old school") for one reason or another!

Politics: The only way one can "make it" in politics is to be "in someone's pocket." If you do not "tow the line" or "toe the line," you''ll surely get the "boot" at the next election. Although the term "honest politician" seems to be an oxymoron, I do know someone like that --- in Atlantic County politics. ...was a "frozen cheeseholder," was going to run for Assembly, now has a lesser position at the local level --- ran headlong into some "political machines"...

It's good to have a second job, if you choose either of the two above--mentioned routes to "success."

Pinelands Preservation: A GRAND IDEA!! Unfortunately, as you well know, this is a touchy subject, and highly politicized... Lobbying skills would be a "plus," but you're not a lawyer --- yet... Have you given thought to a graduate school major in ecology with a minor in botany or chemistry? For a Ph.D., think of something along the lines of "administration"... There are a number of ecologically active groups in the US... "Charisma," and lots of it, would be a strong "plus"...

Just a few ideas... Sorry to be so negative about education and politics, but I've had some very, very B A D experiences, and personally know people who have had their careers (both in education and in politics) ruined --- after many years... They left Trenton, for good.
