Guy, do you know anything about this now demolished gun club? http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.78287876301522&lng=-74.38955962657928&z=18&type=k&gpx=I used to take people out riding (motorcyles) and I would bring them here and tell them it was an old piney house (it looked like a shack and was creepy) and then when we pulled in there, I would scream "there's somebody in the window" and go flying out of there with my freaked out friends close behind. It was pretty funny. It was demolished a few years back.

If you look at the topo, it appears there were several structures there, and according to the 1930 photo, it looked like the cedar swamp was clear cut and there were structures closer to the last intersection.

After looking at historical photos, it appears there was a larger structure there that dissappeared in the late 50's. that or the perspective on the road is off. I could be mistaken about the cedar swamp being cut also, just trying to interpret old photos. I think I will have to investigate around there. It has been at least a year since I have been there.

Jeff,

I don’t know anything about it but wish I did. I have been there quite a few times and just recently with Bob. I even was able to get my other daughter to go on one occasion which is rare.

When Bob and I were there this summer, it is so dense in vegetation you could barely see the outhouse. Evidence from the place looks like it was burned down partially. BTW, it wasn't snowing when we left home.

The 1931 maps show a few buildings much closer to the main road.

There was a different building there in 1956 as you mentioned.

Bob,
I love pygmy pines.the lowest sections i know of are just off bombing range property on greenwood land. The pines I know are about hip high.Is your spot secret or can you swing me some numbers:)I love governors pond. It's ashame it's right next to the road.
I like that whole area out there, like you said hardly anyone goes out there because their scared of the signs I believe. With the spy equipment the government has now maybe i should be too:)I see some ponds on their property just below oswego that appear to be in pygmies.Have wanted to get into that area but haven't made it yet.I have followed the oswego up to sims place in a kayak and did some bushwacking immediately south of the river but didn't go far off it.
Al

Al, my memory is faded, but I think it was right around here on their property:

I always appreciate someone who loves the plains like I do. Come out with me sometime on a Sunday. I have been West of Governors Pond, and they are nearly as small out there too. We can also visit a place I have never been to, but I have had my eye on it for a hideout for when I want to get the hell away from man and his follies. We'll make a day of it.

By the way Al, in researching Warren Grove Bombing Range for the last post, I noticed this structure. I don't know about the rest of you, and you are entitled to your opinion, but to me using a mosque for target practice is wrong...just plain wrong.

looks like the dome of the rock to me:)
why would it be wrong?thats where the peckerheads like to hide.If they bomb us and then hide i a mosque,it is no longer a mosque but a target and I'm not talking department chain store.
Yes I would be glad to hit the plains with you anytime.Me and whippoorbill used to make regualr forays to the spring hill plains and the lower plains.I liked sundays best because they weren't bombing that day.nothing ruins the plains like them planes.be on top of you and scare the doo right out of you.crowberry, kinnikinnick and pyxie! I love it!

I just live earthed that mosque.i do believe thats a scaled down version of the temple mount (haraam al sharif).that is the gilded dome of the rock.I'd love to get photos of that from the ground.probably get arrested in the process.wonder if they scream their prayers from the loudspeakers five times a day.used to wake me up doing that crap.you have no idea ow pissed off you can get when you've been running missions all night and then just get to bed and have that crap wake you up at 5 am.Sorry.me and muslims don't mix:)

Good one Al!

But, I still disagree. A mosque, when it was constructed, was done so for the purpose of worship of God. A God, I think you'll agree, both we and the Muslims agree is one and the same.

Why do we have to bomb them out of there? Starve them out. Make them give up by default. That way you save the mosque for innocent local worshippers.

actually i don't believe they're one and the same but i guess this isn't a good place to get into this.
starving them out would be good as long as they didn't have kids and women to starve with them as they usually do.The muslims i have met really don't look at life like we do anyway, they look at it as an honor to die if they can take a few infidels with them.We fight to avoid dying and to protect others from dying. How do you defeat an enemy who loves death?Give it to them is the only answer I can come up with.I guess thats the military coming out in me:)

Have you guys ever been in this section? http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.79722741031147&lng=-74.39518690109253&z=16&type=k&gpx=

I bush wacked through it. REAL thick! Talk about a sense of isolation. Some hunters get in there, but not many.
Jeff

Those woods pull the skin and clothes right off you. They are intense. I tried to cross right at the gun club in the above photo to the sand pit with Jessica in the spring when the pollen was blowing like smoke and had to bailed.

Last Monday Jeff, I did go deep in an area I wanted to see cause it has some damp spots. I went north to south. Here are my tracks. I usually tell Guy where I am when I'm in this kind of spot in case I get in trouble.

watermark.php

One I got in to the damp spots it was easier walking with grasses and highbush blueberry. The hunters have gone crazy back in there...chopping the hell out of trees and bushes to get a good shot.

watermark.php

I did get into spots even the hunters didn't get to, where I found this:

This is a shot of the pond at the end by the road. This is more often dry than not.

Ive been in those woods, their tough.I refer to those type of woods as man sized plains. The trees are usually 8 to 12 ft tall and travelling through them involves crawling, squeezing.pushing and cussing.Thankfully it doesn't involve briars.A person can really get away from it all in the middle of great swamp and in the middle of one of these man sized plains. You go 10 ft off trail in these plains and you have been swallowed.A dog would have trouble negotiating some of them.

It looks like they have set up every conceivable scenario for routing out the enemy.

those are some great shots of an amazing area Bob!! Concerning the unknown gun club in the pine plains, I visited it today and did not find any additional ruins. However, I was really worn out and didn't look very hard. Also, it is so thick in there that you would, literally, have to step on a foundation in order to find it.

I did find an old mower though, seized, i checked.

Also, I wanted to mention that the structure that I used to "creep out" my friends with is not the structure in ruins now. Here are the foundations (in the foreground) of the structure I found most interesting on my trips back there. I wish I had taken a picture of it before it vanished. There are no other remains of this structure except for tar shingles.

Is the structure you are referring to at the unknown gun club location? I may have missed a conversation if you are referring to a different place.

No, it is there. If you look at the last photo. The cinderblock foundation, in the foreground. There used to be a shack there not long ago. In my first post on this thread I was referring to that structure not the one in the background.
