Have walked this section of the JCRR a hundred times and Jessica noticed this on the weekend. It is 25 feet from the tracks in a denser area of woods.

Why is it made that way?

Don't know. It looks to me that maybe there should have been a second one opposite the side with the opening but there was not. Maybe something fit into the square end and something stuck out the hole?????????

It's like they repurposed something else.

Is there anything like a foundation closer to the tracks? Could be an anchor point for a cable support.

It may be. Nothing else is around. However, there is a wet area right by it and maybe they could not find an acceptable place to anchor so they made that.
