All,

As usual Jes and I went exploring for stone markers, and this time we were searching for one that was considered a "Large Stone", so I felt the snow would not hamper the search as it has been recently.

I had never been in the particular area before, so I parked my car along the road and we headed into the woods. We soon came to a trail and since my GPS said I was heading the proper way we followed it.

Suddenly, I notice a building nestled among some trees and decided to check it out. With the snow present it made for interesting viewing. It was surrounded by holly and where the doors were located there were semi large trees growing. It had not been used in years. There were no other dwellings in the area, and I believe it is on state land. It is remote enough to be in a location that is not well traveled.

The back of the building with the "garage doors".

The front:

From there we moved on toward the stone, and it was tough going because of the massive amount of briers. I now am sporting a major cut in the side of my face.

As I expected the stone was large enough that the snow did not hide the stone. It was made from sandstone and I would consider it the second largest property marker I have found in the pines.

We then decided to check out the location that Chris (Rostriz) informed us was where an F4 had crashed near Bear Swamp Hill. (Not the Bear Swamp Hill Crash)

There is a hole at this location which Chris said was caused by the plane, but I am uncertain of this. I am not certain also that this is NOT the spot so further investigation or proof must be forthcoming.

The reason why I am uncertain is that right in the middle of the hole there are numerous trees growing, with one that appears to be older than 20 years (It crashed in 1985) You decide for yourself and comments are appreciated.

Is this tree older than 20 years?

From there I headed over to the 206 area and was unsuccessful on finding a few things because of the snow.

Nice report Guy. The front of that building is interesting. It looks like a concession stand or something.

Steve

You may be right. But there is nothing around there unless at one time there was a ballfield. This building is hidden in the woods and I can bet that is the only reason it is still standing. The roof is still intact and the insides are dry. I took photo's through the "concession stand" window of the inside.

It is a very nice area except for the briers.

I don't really know the age of pines by sight, but I think it could be 20 years old. I saw some trees half as large that were 10 years old over by Double Trouble. They are growing in an area that was almost clear on the 1995 terraserver.

Anybody ever try a metal detector in the F4 crash area?

That is illegal, and I don't need to get caught doing anything illegal. I have already had problems with a few of my posts, so I will play it safe. Anyway, my metal detector is very very poor.

Interesting post Guy, That structure looks familar to me, but I don't think it is the one I am remembering. Is it west of bear swamp hill right near an old blueberry farm (now overgrown with briers)?

Hmmm....I watched a show on TV about Millville Airfield crash site`s and they were using metal detectors to find plane parts. And I think the guy doing it was just a MD hobbiest.

I think that is the correct location of the crash site. There is plenty visable debris.I found wire, rubber, and riveted together aluminum that is painted olive drab on one side and white on the other.

I never knew a F-4 crashed in the Pine Barrens. Evidently this is a different crash than the one at Bear Swamp Hill. I was always a big fan of the F-4 Phantom, any info on where it came from etc...?
