I'm a horticulturist by trade, I work on a flower farm in Jackson. So, most of my photographs are of plants. This Spring and
Summer I hope to concentrate not only on the plants but also some landscape and architecture. I was looking at some maps and I am trying to come up with a few locations that are not my usual pine barren haunts.

Lovely! I love British soldier lichen. It provides some hidden color in the pines during the drab winter.

this is a beautiful shot! Where did you find such a flat cleared area in a cedar swamp? Looks like an old roadway.

Al, I've never heard the term "Tin Soldier Lichen". I've always heard it called "British Soldier Lichen". I've noticed your use of that name before. Is it a local name for that Lichen? I'm not saying it is wrong, as common names for plants are never really wrong per se, because they are never really right.
Perhaps it is British soldier?I have always called it tin soldier since every tin soldier I had as a kid was always of the British variety.I believe the red fruits (if thats what they are) supposedly resemble their red helmets.

Go ahead and use the name if you like it Al. Bob is absolutely correct. Unless you misidentify the species, the only name without leeway is the scientific one. I always call spotted wintergreen striped wintergreen, even though most references use the former name. But the leaves are almost always more striped than spotted and I just think the later name is more descriptive, so that's the one I use. I also take advantage of the issue when pointing it out on walks, as it also opens up the conversation to the subject of confusion caused by multiple common names.
Ah yes, common vs. Latin. Can't wait to go back to work and struggle with people who want powderpuff bushes or beach grass. A jonquil to my grandma is a daffodil to my mom and narcissus to me.
Aside from the occasional nice picture, easily memorizing Latin names is my only talent. Can't sing lyrics to songs I heard a thousand times, can't name movies or actors, can't tie cherry stems... But gimme a Latin name and its stuck in the gray forever.
