You know what we need ? We need a really good, detailed road map, like the kind they used to give out at gas stations, from the 1930s. That way Father Beck's description of where things were would make more sense. The one little problem I have with his descriptions (besides the fact that they can be really vague sometimes) is the old route numbers and roads mentioned merely as "that new concrete road that runs from XX to XX", or whatever. A good detailed map from his time period would be great.

That's what I was thinking about- Ebay. Whenever I read a chapter out of one of Father Beck's books, I think how I would like to follow in his footsteps to get to the location he's talking about. But usually the route numbers are so different from the ones I know.

When Beck talks about the "new highway that cuts through the pines like a ribbon" he means Rt. 70.

Becks directions are generally horrendous. I don't think that an old road map will help out that much. That said, I will try to find some newer road maps to add to the site.

Route 70 was built in the late 30's but was called route 40. It was changed to route 70 in the 40's. In the town of Marlton and Medford the Philadelphia, Marlton & Medford RR tracks were removed in 1932 and route 40 was built where the tracks were located. All of the cement bridges along route 70 have engraved in them route 40. The problem is that about 10 years ago the state put guard rails in front of every bridge and it blocks the route 40 engraving.

Yes. That's where you get into State highways versus U.S. highways. The 40 we know today is a U.S. highway. What is 70? If it's a State Highway, then we had two route 40s, one a State and one a U.S.

In Cherry Hill and Marlton route 40 originally went down Old Marlton Pike through Main Street in Marlton, and at the Pine Grove Church it turned toward Medford. It was named route 40 there in 1928. But once 70 was built it was named John Davidson Rockafeller (spelling?) hwy. (Route 40)

Great Rail Road stuff, I know Ken (NJVike) will enjoy viewing it also. I am planning a Rail Road outting for sometime this spring, I was thinking about it and I know it would be a fun day. I will be buzzing about Ocean County over time to refresh my memory. I'll post details down the road.
