Mt. Misery Brook access from 70?

Hello,

I'm new here to these forums. I could sit here for hours upon hours reading all the info. here.

My boyfriend and I would like to kayak on Mt. Misery Brook but we are having trouble figuring out just where the access point is. We've spent some time checking out the bridge on 70 that goes over the brook and trying to find a place to get into the brook but haven't had much luck.

Can any of you help us out?

Hi Beth,
Mt. Misery brook is a great trip. However, the river is used very seldomly and as far as I know, I am the only one on this forum that has kayaked that river from route 70 to the Mary Ann bridge. I will give you the best access point, but please heed this caution: It will require some lift overs and is very overgrown in spots. Be prepared for that. Bring clippers and a bow saw. Also, I would not suggest doing it now. The water level will be too low and the vegetation will be VERY overgrown over the river.

There are a few ways to access the river. You could drive down Mt. misery road (going north towards browns mills) and make your first right. There is a steep drop off and then high grass and swamp before meeting the river. You could go down Springdale Blvd (toward country lakes) and make an almost immediate left, but there is again a steep drop and high grass.

I avoided the chigger invested high grass when I loaded in by parking on the north/east side of the river along route 70. I recall you can drive around and behind the guardrail. I don't recall there being much of a trail there, but it is a short pull through the woods before you meet the river.

Good luck and have fun but don't try it now and be prepared for a little work.

We've been very spoiled with easy launching spots along the main part of the Rancocas - was hoping to find one for Mt. Misery too.

Pemberton Township is running a beginners kayaking program - and they're supposed to be doing
that stretch tomorrow. At least I think it's that stretch - the advert says "Route 70 to Mt. Misery Bridge". I'm not signed up Surprised they're doing it with low water levels and all.

We'll tackle that one some time in the future - bow saw and clippers in hand

I think we're going to do Browns Mills to Hanover St. this weekend - should be interesting.

Do you have any pointers on the run from Mary Ann Forge to the New Lisbon dam?

Pretty sure that the river gets pretty choked up and convoluted north of Mary Ann. It is really deep by the old Mary Ann bridge.

I haven't kayaked that stretch but I have hiked around it. Very beautiful, lots of large downed trees.

Wow, I am really surprised they are doing that with a beginning kayaking program. I am especially surprised this time of year. If you find out any more about it, lets us know if anyone survived. Especially the instructor after putting them through that!!!! BTW, You are correct, the mt. misery bridge and the Mary Ann bridge are the same.

I too did that stretch in the early 80's, with a small canoe. It was horrible. We spent half of the trip leaning back, either to get under tree branches or to push them up out of the way. Many of the branches had insects on them, like spiders, and the canoe was littered with floating insects in the water that inevitably collects there. We bailed out at that cabin just up from Mary Ann Forge.

I also did a raft trip from Country Lakes to Mt. Misery Brook. That was nearly as bad, but the beer supply kept the tempo up.

This time of year the Batsto river is usually a good trip. The water level is stable and not too many obstructions. I went Quaker Bridge to the lake last week and was pretty much alone the entire trip. I swam at every sandy area I came to (it was hot!). The water was really cold and felt great. The Pickerel Weed was lining the shore in many areas, very nice! A very relaxing and enjoyable paddle.

I saw that on the sign up form for the Pemberton conoe program too, rt 70 to Mt misery bridge. I wanted to try to attend but have to work on saturdays. I did the Rancocas creek from browns mills(behind dominos at the mirror lake rt530 bridge) to BCC college last sunday. The debris was insane, had to lie down in the boat and do liftovers almost the whole run. Took about 6 hours to get through it (about 4 miles) Me and my boat were a muddy mess. Was quite a interesting trip though, would be a real nice run if some of the debris could be cleared.
