Well, this may be the goofiest song video ever posted on this thread. As is the case with some old nursery rhymes, though, it comes with a dark backstory. Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and his wife Elsa were in Hawaii in January 2018 as artists-in-residency at the Hawaii National Volcanic Park. One Saturday morning, there was an official warning that a ballistic missile was en route. After 30 minutes of impending doom, word came that, in fact, it had been a false alarm. Writing after this event, he thought of blueberries, specifically, THC-infused chocolate-covered blueberries that a friend had recently introduced to the Oldhams. The result is this whimsical little number, Blueberry Jam. Even after repeated viewings, it still puts a smile on my face.

(By the way, the local blueberry season has arrived, so be sure to support our local blueberry growers!)

This is actually not the first Will Oldham song on this thread. Fifteen years ago, a member named nowashburn, only active on the site for less than a week, posted this more somber selection about a man with no wife -- Hard Life. It struck a chord with me. After fifteen years, thinking it's OK to repost it here.

Original post by nowashburn with additional information on Will Oldham

Here's an appropriate one.

Hey, truth is dead, it’s been laid to rest
They buried it late last night right alongside common sense
You can’t say anything anymore without consequence
So button it up and get your ass back on the fence

Don’t dare take a stance on one side or the other
Or the hammer will come down on you like a mother fucker
Civility, reasonable thinking, free speech
Well, these days it seems as though they’re just out of reach

They’ve been replaced with politically correct
And it don’t seem to matter much who we elect
You can vote down the middle, vote for left side, vote for the right
Say something they don’t agree with and you better run for your life

Because they’ll cut you down, run you out of town
So just keep your mouth shut, don’t make a sound
Don’t talk about how you feel, don’t say what’s on your mind
Or they’ll hunt you down like a dog and they bury you alive

Yeah, truth is dead, it’s been laid to rest
They buried it late last night right alongside common sense
No, you can’t say anything anymore without consequence
Truth is dead

1968, I was just 14 for God's sake. I found this song in my life when I was 15 I think. When I heard it I was a pimple-faced teen with issues. This song straightened it all out. It was an outlet, sort of a 'go freaking wild' right now, to let it all hang out. The bass and drums are awesome and the relief it provided was cathartic.

Who remembers Ralph McTell? This is one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard. Well done Ralph.

"That Old Brown Dog"

That old brown dog sleeps in the rain
Unless the sun has shone
That old brown dog is all alone
Since Old Bill been gone
And sleeping in the rain
Only gives a dog a bad name
If Bill were alive
Well, I know he would decide
To have the same thing done

That old brown dog, he smells so bad
Say the people from the town
That old brown dog is almost lame
Someone should put him down
It would be an act of kindness
You know it's for the best
You bring a rope, bring a gun
And it'll all be over
Before the dog can guess

Could an old brown dog have become wise
Guessed they were all after him
His hearing was failing, and his eyes
Were fast growing dim
On the day they came to kill him
He sensed a rabbit on a log
Did anybody see a rabbit
Chased across the meadows
By an old brown dog

That old brown dog, tail wagging
As he laid himself down
It did not seam to matter
That the rabbit had long gone to ground
And there in the summer heat
His old heart ceased to beat
And high above the meadow
The skylarks singing
As the spark went out
