I just posted the newest article on the site - Guy's (Teegate) exploration of the first 40 miles of the Lawrence East-West Jersey Line.

Check it out - it's really interesting to read!

Guy,

Very interesting read,

"He started at a point in Egg Harbor at a marker that is now submerged in the ocean"

How far into the ocean is this? I'm curious as to how much of the shore there as been lost into the ocean.

These stones, were they originally all the same material and similar size, or were they all different?

The calculations on all of this sound as if they must have taken some work!

You had explained to me about the Keith line--how much does that survey differ from the Lawrence line?

Renee,

I guess that should have said a "point" that is now submerged because apparently the ocean has claimed some of the beach. As far as I know there is or was not a marker there. The Lawrence Committee calculated that the "0' point would be at the tip of Edge Sedge Island which is now underwater.

There never was as far as I have read markers put at each mile marker by any one individual or surveyor. Instead each land owner along the line may have put a marker there by themselves or by a surveyor to identify their property. And as you can see by the photo's the stones are of different thicknesses and widths. Their heights obviously have been determined by how well they have withstood the elements and human contact. But so far after marker 15 there has not been any other with the slate type of stone we see from 7 to 15. So maybe the property owners in that area all placed stones there that were somewhat similar. I really do not know anymore than that.

The calculations actually were quite easy once I realized how accurate the locations of the markers really are. Then using basic geometry I was able to figure out where the location of each marker was that I did not have the GPS coordinates for by using the ones I did. Then I had to figure out how to get that information into DMS in my GPS. By playing around with the different formats available on my GPS, I was able to input the info in and convert them to DMS. I was really quite impressed with how accurate the stones were and a GPS is, when I walked for miles through the woods and ended up no farther than 30 feet from my intended target. One was within 3 feet and the farthest was 31 at marker 13.

I can say that I bought the cheapest GPS there is, and because of that I have had to play around with it to get it to do what others can do quite easily. Because of this I have learned quite a bit on how they can be used in other ways such as determining where something should be rather than having to know where it is.

This project has been the most interesting thing I have ever done concerning the pines. My only disappointment is that I did not get to see the Hanover 1824 and 1856 stones before they were stolen. My only hope is that someone will read my article and know where they are, either in someone's yard or garage or wherever, and let someone know about them. Wishfull thinking but then again......

Guy, I envy you. 8)

It is so very cool to tackle an exploration of discovery with the zest and youthful exuberance that people half your age shun. While the rest of 'em are home cooped up watching sports on the boob tube, you find something to do that not only gets you out in the woods and is a real challenge, but you unselfishly bring others along and then share the whole experience with everyone else who could not make it. You sir, are my kind of Guy.

I wish my home and work life was not so busy, I'd love to go on your happy jaunts of great expectations and bracing pine air.

The article was well put together, and I love the photos. Keep up the good work. This web site benefits greatly from your contributions Mr. Teegate.

Thank you Bob, Ben, and Renee for the kind words. As I have said before I am not a writer, but I enjoy adding what little I can to this site.

Just wait until you try 21 thru 26. Jessica and I were exhausted when we were finished them. Most of them are really dense brush. We even lost each other for a while on one of them, and on one I failed to mark my car and we had problems finding our way back.

On Saturday we along with my brother are going to look for a few near Colliers Mill. Then we are heading back into Lebanon Forest where I just noticed on one of the survey maps I have, there is another found stone of some sort. It is not on the Lawrence Line but close by. It looks promising. Then if we have time we may look for 26 and then 25. I had used the supplied coordinates for marker 15 to calculate them previously, and the supplied coordinates are not accurate so we wasted our time. I am not expecting to find anything this time, but who knows.

I sense a challenge, Guy has generously given us the location of the first one on route 9 but we don't have a compass bearing only a vague map that shows the line heading generally northwest. If I could find just one other marker to line up with the rest should be in line with those two. With help from my maptech terrain navigator and garmin GPS 76 I may be onto an adventure! Thanks Mr. Teegate and a splendid article it be!

Teegate,
I was planning on bushwacking to an island along the lower mullica this weekend and then checking out this place I found on my topos called oak island along bass river just below route 9 and then running over to west creek and checking out the lawrence line monument and seeing if i can find another stone further north to line up on but come saturday morning I woke up sick and I"m worse today but I have been here estimating on my topos where this line should run and it looks to run right smack thru Boyd"s Hotel which I visited a couple months ago just east of the fort dix boundary. It was neat because i went past the hotel site and popped out on the swath that is the dix line and i was about .25 mi from my old bivouac site from boot camp and later my guard training days.
You ever been to Boyd"s and when was this hotel built and did it have anything to do with the line?It seems to be sort of the center of a hub on a wheel with sand roads radiating out like spokes.I found two foundations out there and the old road over the stream was pretty neat.
Such a pretty day and I"m stuck here:-(
depressed piney,
from my nose down to my hiney

Al,

I don't know anything about the hotel and have never heard of it. Nothing in the paperwork I have says anything also. I really am not a history buff as you might think, so my knowledge of old places is limited.

You did not suffer alone this weekend, my mom and wife had the same symptoms, but my wife is much better. I can't say that for my mom. She was just sitting in her chair with a blanket on her when I was there today. She wanted to go places but was afraid.

I will be depressed next weekend as you are this weekend, since both days are tied up with non pine barrens related things to do. I may have a few minutes to look for something Steve told me about since it is relatively close.

Boyd"s hotel is about a mile north of the wawa on 539 in whiting.turn left down a dirt road and go back to a field on right just before you get to the ft. dix boundary.theirs a old cellar hole in the field surrounded by brush and one across the old road on your left in the woods. This spot is on the old maps on this site but isn"t listed on modern topos.it shows up as a spidery intersection of roads almost like a pine barrens gettysburg.
hopefully next weekend I"ll make it to west creek so i can find exactly where it"s at on the topo then I"ll know wether it passes thru Boyd"s Hotel or west of that up the dix boundary.
I"m feeling better now but I think it"s the Theraflu and not a real improvement of my condition:)Thats some nasty stuff right up there with Nyquil which my wife loves but it gives me full body shivers.
