I have been informed by a member of this site that the new Regional Chief Ranger for the southern division is Rangerette (Sargent) Capoferri. She now is in charge of all of the rangers in our area.
Would it not be appropriate to make contact with this new Ranger muckety-muck and advise her of the existance of NJPB.com and welcome her - and her colleagues - to sign in, become aware, and keep abreast of topics and concerns expressed by the regular correspondents of this group?
I'd think they'd quickly appreciate the value of being aware of the attitudes and perspectives of this bunch of folks who clearly, in a very first-hand way, care as much if not more about conservation in and of the PBs than do members of any other subpopulation they could identify. I'll agree that there are the occassional conservation officers / rangers in every state to whom what they do is simply a job to be performed perfunctorily ... and by some, imperiously. But to the great majority of conservation officers, both in enforcement as well as management, whom I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with, what they do is a calling that they take seriously and at which they strive to get better and better at what they do and continually learn and augment what they know.
In my dealings, not so good. She pulled me over for speeding on Quaker Bridge after I took the side trail so we could avoid having one of us turn off trail to allow the other to go by (i.e. to avoid hurting the environment and plants). She had no basis for my speed as I know they don't have radar guns and said I was "squirrelly in the sand" (ps. I have 33" BFG Muds and it was dry and sandy, it's always squirrelly for me).
I've had other run ins with her as many of my friends have as well. She's definitly 90% police officer, 10% ranger from what I have seen/heard. I'd love to be a ranger and be able to use discretion in my decisions and not just go all out law-dog style like most of the ones I run into. I'd also be picking up trash in my SUV that the state provides me, not driving past it wasting away my day.
