We saw two northern fence lizards on Saturday, March 20. They were about a mile and a half north of the Batona Camp, on the Batona trail.

I know March and April is the prime mating season for the lizard. Of my thousands of miles walked in the Pine Barrens, this was my first up close encounter. I have seen them previously, scurrying quickly from our presence. This was my first meeting face to face.

Does anyone have any other recent sitings of this northern reptile?

The next time you see one catch it and hold it by the tail.

They are HARD to catch...very fast.

What happens? Does the tail come off?

I lived in Florida for years. Had a cat that hunted lizards and bought the back to the house. I know some lizards shed appendages to get away.

Lizard sighting!

I saw this one at Friendship last fall and we hung around together for about 20 minutes. It was scurrying up and down the tree and playing "peek-a-boo" around the tree. Seemed sociable. I have also seen them very skittish at times too.

I caught one in my back yard once early in the spring, I think he was getting some of his first sun of the season and was still half asleep.

Since they have built more houses around me I do not see them anymore.:(
