I don't know much about Long Island, but made some maps of it a few years ago. The NAIP imagery (which is intended to show tree canopy and agriculture) clearly shows how over-developed it is. The Long Island Pines are just little parks surrounded by urban sprawl and gridlocked traffic.

Now, of course it's important for them to preserve what is left, but it's a vastly different situation from what we have in the New Jersey Pines. This is what the Pines might have become if the Jetport and New City had been built.
