Driving down Hampton Rd near sunset I happened upon this guy/gal. Didn't have time to set my camera right so the pix is really bad but it does show what I find interesting about this deer. As you can see it has white or light grey hind quarters. Is this some sort of mutation or perhaps old age?

It is not terribly unusual to see deer that have significant white coloration like that shown in your picture. I have heard of ones seen that are almost completely white. I guess it is just a natural variation. Some hunters I've talked to have passed on shooting such a deer. I suppose its either superstition or just the fear of eating a deer that ain't brown. I can't imagine that there would be anything wrong with the meat.

Remember though that you were not that far from Quaker Bridge. Maybe you saw the ghost of the White Stag or one of his descendents! Did it warn you of trouble ahead?

Well it was the only shot of the day that did not turn out. Hmmmmm........

That is a piebald deer. I used to have a herd near my house. I have seen a few that are almost completely white. If you search the nature and environment topic, you will find expansive discussions on them.

I wonder if they get a type of mange? Or was it definitely hair?
