Thanks. That's the sort of thing I was looking for, but I think it still has a way to go before it catches up with the stand alone GPS units (and puts them out of business). The reviews on Skobbler are very mixed, but reading them I found out about this one - OsmAnd. It gets mixed reviews too but a much higher ratio of 5 star reviews than does Skobbler.

By the way, what sort of holder are you using to prop up your tablet? It looks too far away though. I've got my GPS screwed onto the dash with a RAM mount. It projects forward a little so I can see it clearly. That could be more of a problem if using a bigger tablet as a GPS as I don't have that much spare real estate on my dash board that can be covered up by a big screen.

Personally I'm not interested. For me "it's all about the map". 
It's also just ugly - reminds me of the electroluminescent display from an alarm clock back in the 1980's. I wouldn't want to look at that on my windshield all the time, it would be distracting. I mount my GPS a little below dashboard level, near the radio. That way it's not part of my field of vision when I look at the road through the windshield, but still easy to see if I want.
I guess it will appeal to some people however, probably if you do a lot of city driving where you make turns every few blocks and need to be in the right lane. Some discussion here, if you're interested:

I think I might like that system more if it came with a missile lock feature (without real missiles, of course
