Last week Gabe (pinelandpaddler) sent me a PM asking to come along the next time I paddled the Skit. He suggested a starting point that raised my eyebrows, the little bridge upstream of Batona Camp. Well I don't know of that ever being done but with the water being up and Gabe being a very capable explorer I said how about Saturday, and as simple as that we were off. He brought along a friend Bill, who is equally capable and has a great interest in the history of the area.
Our track, the degree of difficulty illustrated by the number of GPS samples.

Going was slow immediately after the bridge where the little stream at the bridge spread out into a swamp with no defined channel. We had our balance tested as we continually got out of our kayaks to drag them over obstructions. We walked on hummocks to avoid deep holes, but it was fun. Eventually we got stuck, with nothing even resembling a river. The biggest difficulty was the small trees there were so closely spaced that the kayaks would not fit between them. We eventually worked our way through to a beautiful open area which is near the field above.

Paddlin the Skit, part 2

A nice dam below Batona Camp.

Going was easier between the Batona Camp pond and the Mill Pond.

We took out at the Mill Pond Dam. It would be a very long dense run from there to Carranza Road and there was a storm coming. From our earler experience we realized the kayaks might not fit through the wamp. Thus far we covered 1 1/2 miles in 2 hours 20 minutes.

Th trip from Carranza Road to Hampton Park was uneventful, as we enjoyed the old dams and bogs. Bill told tales of people fishing the large ponds before the dams broke in the 60's. The upper dam he called the breeched dam.

Our entire track.

The second leg was 2.1 miles in 2 hours 25 minuted.

It was a very plesant day.

BTW, I have a lil' hypothesis about the origin of the name "Skit". Old deeds refer to a Mount Skitt and a Mount Skitt Saw Mill. Mt. Skitt is here: http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.80345892691412&lng=-74.61296081542969&z=15&type=topo&gpx=

My guess is that "Skitt" (or "Skiff, as it was sometimes called) was a surname. There are many variants of these two surnames, but I haven't found any in the records in the area. Seeing that the only "skit mills" I've ever heard about are in the Pine Barrens, and since the Skit Mill on the Skit Branch probably derives its name from a surname, I'm further guessing that the "Skit Mill" on the West Branch Wading River is a misnomer. A lot of speculation, I know.

Jerseyman?

Gabe:

I think we had this discussion last year:

If you drop down a couple more messages, you will find information from the OED. Skit or Skitt is a term that remains mysterious.

Best regards,
Jerseyman

Oh man! Gabe! Is this the paddle you contacted me about on Friday? I would have put off the opening day of archery deer season for this trip!

It looks like you all had a nice trip! That is some beautiful country!

Great report and pictures, Ed. Thank you.

These are some great shots, Ed. Looks like a hardcore paddle, to be sure! The Skit is one of my favorite piney criks. Thanx for sharing.

Guy called it, that pic of the ancient beaver stump is awesome!

I've done the skit from carranza down but have only walked portions of it above carranza.Gabe you and Ed are hard core!Just below the beaver dam at the bottom of the first section you guys did me and Bill were traipsing the swamp along the crik when i stepped on a damn yellerjacket nest.I tried to run in the muck and immediately went down on my face wile the jackets played a tune on my back.I was belly crawling through the mud screaming at the top of my lungs. This alerted Bill who calmy walked around the nest and caught up to me eventually. He thought it was quite funny.Anyhow you seem to enjoy yakking through terrain I would leave the boat home on and wade it.Hats off to you and Ed,maybe I'll try that strip some day.Still have the upper wading to try form Chatsworth lake to Speedwell.
