), not only can fire “jump” across large openings under the right conditions, but a single burning leaf or ember can be blown hundreds of yards and can extend the fire well downwind. Few openings can be guaranteed to stop a fire but at those locations firefighters are more able to battle them to a standstill or set a backfire. Backfires can only be set upwind of a cleared line, be it a sand or paved road or a plow line. So any opening has value from a forest fire perspective but the amount of trees being removed on the Parkway does not seem to make it a much better firebreak than it was before. It’s just one step closer to resembling how it appears in the northern counties it goes through. Pretty soon the term “Park”way will be as ironic as the term “Garden” State.
