Hello All,
I was hoping someone could give me a feasable answer. Friday night we took a ride out Hampton road from 206. After high crossing there are a series of crossroads. As you get closer to what I know now is Iron Pipe road, you can take a left on a freshly plowed road courtesy of the Forestry service. While back there, we thought there was a problem with the truck and got out to investigate. Once outside, all one could hear was the howling and barking of a large number of dogs. I'm not talking one or two, if I had to estimate I'd say more than 10. Now I originally thought maybe someone escaped from the boot camp on Carranza, but there were no human voices or lights, as the road we were on will eventually take you to Carranza rd just below where it changes from paved to gravel. Now I do realize there are so called wild dogs around, as I have bow hunted the pines for 26 years now, but I've never heard or witnessed quite so many. What do you think ?

Could have been the annual Wild Dog Convention. :D

Last year I saw 2 strays at Hawkin's Bridge camping area. They were very ematiated and looked at me like I would make a good meal. One looked like a Rottweiler and was quite scary looking. I reported them to the ranger station but they just shrugged it off.

A group of us were hunting the Stafford Forge area back in the late 80's and a friend of mine was actually forced to stay in his treestand by 2 or three of them. Also, I know back in the early 80's the asylum on 72 at 4 mile was having problems with the dogs attacking their inmates

I don't know how close to Eagle you were, but the people who live by the Eagle Tavern cellar hole have dogs.

Another possibility would be a fox hunt, although I didn't think those happened at night. I ran into some foxhunters at Friendship a few years ago -- helped one find one his his wayward dogs.

We were close to where the tracks used to cross Caranza Rd. a ways down from Friendship. I thought along the lines of a hunt of some sort as well, maybe Raccoon? I believe they are hunted at night but I'm not sure if Jersey has a season on them or when it would be.

Hmmm............ I wonder if some kid escaped from the juvenile center near by.

I was thinking that as well, but when we reached Carranza, there were no signs of anything like that. I would guess if a juvie escaped there would be people and lights all over the area conducting the search. We checked around most of the area and never really saw the source of it all.

Two possiblities to consider. Coyotes or maybe fox hounds from a fox hunt. I can't recall when they usually do the fox hunts. I see them often where I am but I haven't recently. It might have been a practice run for the hounds.

Not a fox hunt, but likely a 'coon hunt; they are a definite night activity! (see Guy's post re: a "treed" coonskin)

If so they were not anywhere near where I was today. So it may have been a different one.

Are you allowed to hunt red fox and racoon in new jersey? Is there a season for these two animals? Also I thought only coyotes out west howl, I remember hearing or reading this somewhere.

I was the passenger with Broke Jeep Joe and I felt that the bark/yelp sounded like hounds which can be used for tracking many different animals humans included and I dont believe sound anything like coyotes. We thought it may have been a coon hunt because they were not moving at all because we moved out to Carranza Road and did not see any sort of lights or vehicles to be an escaped convict juvenile or otherwise(ancora). They may have had the animal being pursued trapped and that is why they were not moving. We had experienced similar dog noises over by a trail off of hampton approximately 2 miles from the bridge below hampton furnace but that was a few years ago before that last big burn there.
We had taken the trail that is one of the first lefts you can make after leaving High Forge and moving towards Washington. It was recently plowed wider and the dogs were to our right, somewhere between us and the area of friendship. We could not find a way or sign of anyone in the area to link these animals to so i believed them to possibly be someone training their dogs.
Does anyone feel they could be ferrell?

Well I do appreciate the humor of your post and who doesn’t need more cowbells, I do believe that you missed the point of my post. The post was to inform those that do hike in the woods and even hunt that these animals are out there and I know some people are well aware of this but some newbies, like yourself, may not be aware of the location of these dogs. Yes I did spell the word incorrectly as we humans are allowed and often do and frankly that is not my point here. My point is that many people use these forums to gather information concerning the Pine Barrens and the special ecosystem that the Pine Barrens offer, an ecosystem not seen anywhere else in the world and studied throughout it.

I know I misspelled the word my fault and like I said I appreciate the humor and will usually be person doing the ball busting not getting it although I do tend to set myself up as I did here.

I came here to learn information relative to me and my interests and inform people of my knowledge

first of all, no, that's not the purpose of your post. that was the purpose of broke jeep joe's original post. the purpose of your post is to express your opinion that the animals sounded more like hounds than coyotes and add details about a previous encounter of a similar phenomenon in the same general area. so in case you were wondering, i DID pay attention to what you have to say, apparently even more than you.

some newbies like myself? what about you, your forum title is newbie as well, not to mention that you have one less post than me. of course if you count the one extraneous post i've made that wasn't barrens related (namely the above joke), i guess that makes us totally even. as long as we're judging people by their forum titles/stats that is...

and i'm not sure what you're trying to say about newbies like us not being aware of the location of these dogs. if you're talking about hampton furnace or glossy sprung road, yes, i am familiar with these locations and once again it appears even more than you because your suggestion that they could be hounds hunting a person from ancora is absurd. there's no way a mental patient could make it through that many miles of wilderness to end up in the middle of wharton.

also, since you were dissatisfied with low information content of my previous post here's a whole report for you to peruse on feral dogs: http://wildlifedamage.unl.edu/handbook/handbook/allPDF/ca_c77.pdf

it appears that they do like to run in packs. also, i know that years ago when i used to go to a cherry hill gym located in the corridor between 295 and the turnpike, the owner said that that area had a big problem with rabid cats. apparently being rabid gave them some sort of urge to gather and get into huge fights amongst themselves and he said that it was not uncommon to see the losers of such fights dragging themselves away bleeding and injured. i'm not sure if this rabies-induced behavior could be generalized over to dogs, but if so maybe you were hearing some rabid dogs having a rumble :v:

ok... i think you mean relevent but other than that this holds true for me as well. i merely came up with a humorous way to inform people of my knowledge of the correct spelling of feral ;-)

sorry if you thought i was being a troll but i assure you i am very interested in the pine barrens and most of the topics discussed on these forums, but i hope we don't have to be so uptight in discussing these topics that we can't handle the occasional joke.

EDIT:
also, i just noticed that you guys posted this in the off topic forum! if you're that interested in not having an off topic comment or joke, maybe this post belongs someplace else?
