I know these are poor pics... I was in my yard last week and looking up saw a bird doing the circling thing, but really poorly. The Turkey Buzzards are so graceful and swooping and this bird was having a hard time of it and very awkward. As it got closer overhead, I could swear it was an owl. It did not have the profile of a Hawk or Osprey. It had a blunt head. I looked through my bird books but really can't find a match under owls. I was able to scramble and snap some pictures, although very poor.

Any ideas on what this is?

Keith if I had to venture a guess I would say young red tailed hawk. You can rule out peregrine, cooper's, sharp-shinned....I would say red tailed.

I did see it closer than these pics and I could not see the raptor head. Maybe the plumage was throwing me off. I still think the width of the head protruding from the body was rather large. Thanks for the PDF., good resource.

We have a family (I am guessing) of four, Red Tail Hawks in Berlin Boro around the Camden County Park. There is also an owl of some sort, interesting noises come out of the park in the wee hours from the owl and the hawks.
