* TIMING...10 AM to 8 PM Today.

* WINDS...West-northwest 12 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...Recoveries only 40 to 50 percent early this
morning, with minimum humidity 20 to 25 percent this afternoon.

* TEMPERATURES...Mid 30s to mid 40s.

* IMPACTS...Critical fire weather conditions could cause rapid
wildfire growth and spread if ignition occurs.

There is a fire in Whiting and 539 is closed near Route 70. That is not a good area to have a fire.

...ELEVATED RISK OF WILDFIRE SPREAD THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS
EVENING...

A combination of low relative humidity, gusty westerly winds, and
dry fine fuels will lead to an elevated risk for fire spread with
any potential fire starts this afternoon across both New Jersey
and Delaware. Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will
range from 25 to 30 percent across the region. Winds will be
sustained from 10 to 15 mph with gusts around 20 to 25 mph,
highest around mid to late afternoon. Fine fuel moisture may be
somewhat of a limiting factor from reaching true Red Flag Warning
conditions, mainly across southern New Jersey, due to rainfall
last Friday and perhaps some degree of greenup beginning. However,
with a few wildfires started across the region on Tuesday, dry and
dead vegetation is clearly receptive to fire starts and fire
spread.

Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential
ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be
sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses,
dead leaves, and other tree litter that ignite will have the
potential to spread fire quickly.

...ELEVATED RISK OF WILDFIRE SPREAD THIS AFTERNOON INTO THIS
EVENING...

A combination of low relative humidity, westerly breezes, and dry
fine fuels will lead to an elevated risk for fire spread with any
potential fire starts Thursday afternoon and evening across
eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the eastern shores
of Maryland.

Minimum relative humidity values this afternoon will range from
22 to 26 percent across the region. Winds will be somewhat lighter
and not as gusty as the past couple of days. However, this
afternoon into early evening west winds will still be sustained 8
to 12 mph, and a brief gust to 20 mph cannot be ruled out. Fine
fuels in the form of dry or dead vegetation will be quite dry as
well, and conducive to fire starts and fairly quick fire spread.
This is particularly true in areas that have not received hardly
any rainfall in the last 10 days, across much of Pennsylvania to
northern and central New Jersey.

We got about 1 inch of rain in May and typically get 5-6. It’s once again drying up ponds, canals, etc. Woods is quite quiet, grey tree frogs barely calling because it’s so cool at night.

Is there currently a fire? It smells awfully Smokey in Shamong. Seems late for control burn unless they are trying to kill emerging wildlife like dopes!

How exactly would this be a problem in a naturally fire dependent habitat? And since the prescribed burn season leads right into the highest risk part of the wildfire season, with associated hotter and faster moving fires, if fire was a problem at this time of the year for these species they wouldn't be here in the first place.

Individuals are always harmed in these either natural or human-induced events, but in nature, habitat and populations matter more than individuals.
