Jeff, Bob, and All,

While on an outing with BobM a few years back, we stumbled on the stone shown at the below link, and were wondering what the inscribed SB initials stood for, and what property the stone marked.

http://www.njpinebarrens.com/teegate/main.php/download/907-1/SB.jpg

Jeff (woodjin) has visited this location also, and has asked about it, and I still can't really give a definite answer to him what it is for. However, in the past few days I may have come up with a possible answer. Then again maybe not....

Recently, I was reading some information that was written by a former local historian ( Scott W. ) who had researched Red Oak Grove which is near where the stone in question is located. His research found that a man named Samuel Bryant (SB) purchased a tract of land near Red Oak Grove in the 1840's, and in the 1850's it was foreclosed on. By 1857 he was dead and his property sold to various individuals.

The problem with this is that all of the stones I know about from the 1850 are from sandstone. And could that granite post have lasted 150 years without some frustrated hunter shooting it?

In any event the mystery is one that I would like to solve, and hopefully one day the answer will come my way.

Was this outing when we met the man with rifles who "hunts people", or the "4 watersheds in one day" trip?

In any case, the stone looks too nice to shoot, maybe that's the case. And hunters who make an effort to get that far in are more likely to respect the environment (I'm a thinking) than those who park and walk a hundred yards into their tree stand from a paved road.

Any clues found on that latest map we were treated to on the other post?

Guys,
This might seem odd, but that almost looks like some sort of utility marker,
which would probably support it's date more in the 1900's.
Would you consider it too far off any trails, roads, etc to be relevant to any utilities past or present ??

It does look wicked sturdy for a marker.
If it was for a fence or gate you would likely
see mounts on it or rusted studs, straps, rust marks etc.

Silly question, why couldn't that be a 58 ??

It was when we met the man who hunts humans.

It is a property marker because what looks like a road behind it is not a road, it is a county line even though some people have driven on it. The age is in question for sure. In the 1850's sandstone was the primary stone, but this one still could be from then. I will continue to research.

There are no utilities where this is.

without seeing it myself, its hard to tell.

that looks like concrete, and the initials chiseled are in a very art deco font face.

this thing, if from the 1850s, would be older than blacks stone. look at the quality of that stone and others of similar vintage.

The full-frame view detail suggests the figures were hand cut - rather inexpertly - rather than sandblasted thru a stensil. Having done some stone carving I can't believe a hand carver would put an errant, superfluous serif on the end of the top of the number 5. That top-right down-sweep is equal to the lower-left up-sweep; hence, an "S" I'll grant that the "B" could just as well be an "8", but note that the right side of the "B" and the left side of the "S" are so close to the edge that some spalding has occurred to each. The "S" is still legible as such, but the "B" has lost he dimple on the right side that any self-respecting "B", even a hand-carved one, should have. Now ... could it be "B8"? I suppose so, but doubt it; and I must admit that my grounds for doubt are essentially non-existant, so I'm probably now entering that dangerous zone in which I'm tempted to say more than I know or can even intelligently surmise.

Best t'y'all,
Dave

Wow....Now there's some speculation.

Part that bugs me is that I swear I saw one like this or similar

at least down in Hammonton.

I don't think we can assume anything, since as of yet I am not even sure what this marker actually is for. Since it is on a county line I feel confident it is or was a property marker.

As for one like it in Hammonton, if you are thinking about the same one that I am, you should have said " I swear I saw TWO like this or similar at least down in Hammonton".

The same place I was before. I work 54 hours a week and I am not able to properly go to the places I need to for researching this and the 100 other things I would like to know. It is frustrating! That has always been my biggest problem. If I had the proper time I would know so much more.

Thanks for asking.
