A walk around Friendship (and nearby) with my wife. This was also a first pine-barrens hike for my dog. He did well. But he did refuse to cross a slightly submerged board adjacent to a bog. We assisted him.

Thanks for these photos, Whip! It is so good to see Friendship again.

Buddy must have had great fun exploring the strange new world of bushes and bogs. I like the various expressions on his face, especially when he is being "assisted" across Ed's bridge. His eyes! "Can't believe all this water! Hope she doesn't drop me!"

Your reflections always provide food for thought. The one with vibrant green trees below a leafless shore is a nice contrast, and the fourth one from the end, a study in sepia and charcoal, speaks to me of the whole bog waiting . . . for spring.

It's coming! I can't wait to see it unfold in that beautiful place.

A gloomy but magical Tuesday spent wandering Wharton. My personal highlight was listening to a chorus of eastern towhees and redwing blackbirds at the Beaver Pond on the Mullica. The two species of birds in symphony sound like close cousins. Gloria and I then spent much time near Skit Branch and meandered about for miles, including the Quarter Mile area. Pretty sad, that. Let's hope that scar fades as the area otherwise is beautiful. The day ended with a quick jog around Friendship Bogs. She left me in her dust.

Speaking of Friendship Bogs, I really enjoyed your book Glo..."The Story Shell". The names were very cool...Skitter, Gaffer, Leeper, Zip, Pibbin, and my favorie; Chewink, the towhee. I love some of the dialogue, especially when Leeper was bothered by the dog....and we all know that "water dogs are the worst":

..."So I'm takin a nice little nap....and this black dog comes poking along the river...next thing I know he's sniffing and pawing at me. Then he grabs me in his mouth and tosses me up and down. Crazy."

Happens to me all the time too. Don't you just hate that?

I really liked the illustrations, the way they were kind of blended between line drawings and (was it) photoshop? The way the landscape in the background looks kind of real.

Very well done. I hope you sell many!

Thank you, Bob. I had fun writing that book. Credit our Black Lab for the dog-with-frog scenario. He could carry a duck in his mouth without ruffling a feather. You nailed the artist's technique. I was a little worried when he told me how he was going to illustrate the book, but his sample for the first chapter laid my fears to rest.

And thank you, Whip, not only for taking me to lovely places on the Mullica and to the horribly disfigured landscape of the Scar, but also for your assistance in moving that trestle from the Skit to the Batsto.
[Footnote: I kept telling Whip about my favorite spot on the Skit--this trestle with a great view.

When we got there, he responded with commendable kindness: nice view, wrong river!]

Yikes. This is the first photo I've looked at from today's hike with Gloria along some overgrown bogs in the Friendship area. I hope the others measure up. Gloria's keen eye noticed this dragonfly just out of its exoskeleton at the outset of our trip. I'd just mentioned that I was wanting to try out the macro setting on my new camera. "Okay," she sez. "Here you go."

Thanks Whip.Now I can add dragonflies to the list of insects I'm deathly afraid of.That one could obviously bite my nose while beating me to death with it's wings.I'll never blow on a doodle bug hole again.
