This isn't exactly the right thread, well sort of. I couldn't find the thread discussing the rail road rebuild thread to Clayton's sand pit in Woodmansie. Work was done on the road crossings in Manchester and Mt. Misery rd. Talk was Clayton got a grant to resurrect the RR to Lakehurst to transport sand and get the heavy trucks off the road. I haven't heard or seen anything since the work on the road crossings. The RR tracks themselves haven't been touched. Has this project fallen by the wayside or just delayed?

I'd heard that the object was to provide sand to construction in north Jersey, particularly the planned additional Hudson River tunnel, which project was cancelled. This cancelled the RR renewal project.

I never understood why some of the sand plants don't utilize the railroad. The railroad tracks go right by the mines in Tuckahoe, but everything is moved by truck. I would think it would be more efficient to move large amounts of material to Pennsylvania by rail.

The crossing work was done for a general scheduled maintenance program by the state. No specific project was the reason for it. There was info on the NJ transportation web site.

Maybe 2 years ago pine trees growing in the tracks were cut and new stone was brought in on the RR bed along Pasadena rd. It certainly appeared something was happening, then the thread here mentioning Clayton. All rumor I guess?

Anyone know where most of the sand goes? I've heard it is being used for fracking out of State. The trucks are a steady flow 6 days a week. I imagine they're bringing to a loading area? I've heard Lakehurst area where there are active tracks? Maybe all rumor.

Anyone hear of plans to expand the pit? There are snake traps just to the North of the active lake. Usually means getting ready to clear cut and bulldoze.

Pretty sure it is a fed requirement. They are very skilled at that sort of thing.


Generally the grade crossings are redone periodically for the benefit of the motorists traveling over them. The old Camden and Amboy crossing at South Broad Street in Yardville was notorious for throwing your car out of alignment and jarring your teeth out of your head until DOT redid it about 10 years ago.

The line from north of Whiting south to Bullock is listed as active. South of Bullock it is listed as abandoned. The crossing at Mt Misery Rd, which is what this thread turned out to be about, is the southern limit of the active line. Along Savoy is the abandoned portion.

That strikes me as odd, with the line from Lakehurst to Woodmansie being owned by Clayton. I would not expect a change in its status at a point along that segment.

You heard correct. I was with another member of this site and we ran into the Supervisor of Clayton's and he told us exactly what you wrote.

So, I guess Clayton is upset for the loss as well.
If the rumor I heard about Jersey sand being used for fracking is untrue then I guess the sand isn't going to a central location but probably to one of Clayton's many concrete plants.

I agree with the line terminating at the Mt. Misery crossing. The tracks and bed do appear in decent shape North. Wonder when the last time they seen a train?
So the Mt. Misery crossing is sort of a bridge to nowhere as the tracks and bed are disintegrated starting immediately on the south side of the crossing. A little farther down, just before Clayton's is where the train derailed and turned over. I remember seeing it many years ago, forget the date though. Anyone remember?
